  1. A Naotane waki up for auction. The hada pattern work is simply mind blowing. I don't really keep track of waki so no comment on price, but this is well worth a look and a picture save for admiration: http://www.sword-auction.jp/en/content/as16144-%E8%84%87%E5%B7%AE%EF%BC%9A%E5%BD%AB%E4%B8%89%E6%97%A5%E6%9C%88-%E5%A4%A7%E6%85%B6%E7%9B%B4%E8%83%A4-%E8%8A%B1%E6%8A%BC%E4%B9%B3%E5%89%B2%E5%9C%9F%E5%A3%87%E6%8B%82%E5%90%89%E7%94%B0%E6%96%87%E5%B9%B3-%E6%96%87%E5%8C%96%E4%BA%94%E5%B9%B4%E4%B8%AD%E7%A7%8B%E4%B8%8A%E6%97%AC-wakizashi-hori-mikaduki-taikei-naotane-kao
  2. Close this thread.
  3. Wow!!!! Thanks Barry!
  4. Never knew that!!!!
  5. I figure most regulars here have seen this sword, but I was looking at it last few nights and thought I would share just in case. Tachi made in 12th century. This example is wildly healthy and has so much to admire feature wise. http://www.emuseum.jp/detail/100187/000/000?mode=detail&d_lang=en&s_lang=en&class=6&title=&c_e=&region=&era=&century=&cptype=&owner=&pos=1&num=4
  6. Props to poster original poster John. He could have just posted a picture and said "what is this?" and someone here would know. Instead looking to study and find out on his own. Best way to learn. Barry, GREAT idea about the Museum angle. I never even thought of that.
  7. But the sellers name is Muramasa1! Gotta be real.......
  8. Interesting thread!
  9. Report back.
  10. Confused. Any huge suriage or polish or what ever is going to be wildy expensive. Is this a classic or something?
  11. I don't want to draw attention to something but I was very close to buying a sword from Aoi when a helpful member here pointed out a nakago defect/erase evidence (not saying they did it, of course not, but was not noted in description) and that closed that sword out to me. I think there can be good reasons for various things to be removed by people in those times, but blew it for me.
  12. I am moving this way as well. Tired of listing scanning, ok quality swords with a 30% premium attached, etc. Better to deal with someone that knows what they have, knows what its worth (approximate LOL) and go from there. Auctions are annoying and would only be if I found a sword I HAD to have.
  13. Raymond, of course that's the one! I should have known. I thought it was the shirasaya, but the tsuka end makes total sense. If the shirasaya long end is that tight, wow! Great work but I would worry about rubs.
  14. I have a question that I had after I saw a picture of a sword with double bo-hi. I cannot find that picture again sadly, as it would show what I am about to ask very clearly. How much clearance is accepted as "correct" in a new shirasaya? The sword I mentioned above had a shirasaya and it had double fullers carved into it to accept the bo-hi. It looked VERY tight. Maybe not even 1mm from sword. That to me seemed like a recipe for rubbing. Just interested.
  15. I wish I could even guess, but really fun watching very smart folks add guesses. Love these threads.
  16. I know ultimately it's always dollars and cents, but I wish I was a multi millionaire and could find the right buyer for any sword. I think in this hobby it's crucial. A sword may have zero feeling wise to one guy who is just buying a name or style, but it's another person's unicorn sword. Though I am told a sword always finds it's way to it's real lover. Hope so!
  17. Amazing detective skills as always Raymond! Well looks like technically I made this post in error, and I actually did know the sizing definitions, but did not apply them. Ikubi-like? I have seen a few real nihonto ones around and a newly forged sword (Komonjo ) trying to copy the style and should have been more specific. Still, great thread and great discussion.
  18. I really liked that offering Hamfish, glad it sold! I was informed a great nihonto scholar thinks ikubi was never really a thing, just repaired tips to that shape. Seems we should be able to know this as fact or fiction by now. Interesting.
  19. This is a modern sword (Aoi Art) but an ikubi kissaki will always grab me! I know why they were phased out and all that, but love them all the same. Like to see examples: https://www.aoijapan.com/tachi-tamura-tosimoto-saku-blade-length-90-4-cm
  20. You are going? Awesome! Have fun and report back! Wanted to go but had to do a work presentation today for entire department. Exhausted.
  21. All I can find, not sure when the actual shinsa judging is, probably says on the registration form: http://www.ncjsc.org/sf_token_kai.htm Lot's of folks I know will be there, should be fun to hear stories! Wish I could have gone.
  22. I know about zero about nihonto. I know less than zero about fittings (except that I love silver ones!) so will defer to your opinion. Always an exception to every rule. Random good things do not outweigh the voluminous crap. I remember a post here on NMB from a member that was good at finding eBay poor blades, having them reworked, then passing Tokubetsue Hozon after that. Hope he is rich.
  23. haha was gonna suggest this!
