The kozuka IS dented I am hard pressed to decide if it is a feature of the art or rather through handling.

Thank you all for taking the time to answer. I recall seeing a type 98 with black Ito and haven't seen many more since then It would be cool to see photos of an actual sword shop in Japan circa 1940-1944. Often wondered how the pricing structure for average type 98 vs elaborate upgrades for the same sword was at that time. I don't own a copy of Dawsons book but will likely track down a copy. Thanks again

This is likely a newb question but can anyone here tell me the uses of different colored Ito And if they were relevant to certain ranks in the IJA ? I have seen numerous brown and an almost golden colored and an occasional black. Have Often wondered what the choices were and whom could choose or if it were an option based on rank. Or for instance if the colors were for different units inside separate branches. This may have been asked already however after a search I didn't see a thread on this subject It is however possible that I have overlooked a thread on this subject. Many thanks, Kris

Japanese Military Sword Please Help To Identify
angus replied to angus's topic in Military Swords of Japan
Thanks for all the advice on the matter of clean or not clean The only issue I see as a continuing problem that will only get worse with time is the patches of red rust on the blade Surely if allowed to continue to grow without some form of mitigation it will only further damage the blade Leaving the furniture as is is very acceptable but that red rust !! Mind you I am not speaking about the tang obscured and likely protected by the hilt Possibly this rust has formed as a direct result of years ( post war) if this sword being used and handlers by those without a care as to wiping the finger prints off the blade etc -
Japanese Military Sword Please Help To Identify
angus replied to angus's topic in Military Swords of Japan
First let me say thank you both for identifieng this swords maker and era. I would like to know how it could be cleaned up a little so as to not damage it any more than it already is. Mainly to remove any active rust spots present on the blade and maybe also some of the dust and grime build upon the Tsuba ? His intentions aren't to make it shine like a new penny but rather to just preserve it a little and clean what is viable without removing patina. Again thank you very much, Kris. -
My father was at a yard sale recently and purchased this sword from the daughter of the man who brought it home as a momento of his service . Could anyone here please help to identify this sword and possibly when it was made and by whom it was made and the branch of service. Many thanks in advance for sharing your hard won knowledge. Kris.

Please Have A Look At This Mei For Translation
angus replied to angus's topic in Translation Assistance
Not to sound completely inept about these swords / works of art / does the condition of this sword warrant having it restored or would it be best to oil it up and leave it as it is ? I do realize that the photos I have provided leave little to work with but it is a question I have to ask. Thank you all for taking your time to address this question and again for sharing your formidable knowledge. Kris s. -
