  1. Vancouver Island is almost as close as I can get to Japan and still be in Canada.
  2. Even in polish, the hamon does not look as spectacular as others that I have seen. I added a couple of other pre-polish photos in case they add anything. Obviously, post-polish photos will be more valuable.
  3. I visited my wakizashi last week and it looks great in polish. I left it behind to have the saya restored and I am purchasing a new tsuba to replace the one that was on it. Once I get it back, I will post some photos. The polisher assessed the blade as koto with attribution to Fujiwara Masasane. Once I have enjoyed it for a while, I will send it for Shinsa, along with the fuchi-kashira.
  4. Just an update on my wakizashi. It is now in the hands of a polisher for restoration. He said that it appears to be about 500 years old and he expects to be able to determine the smith once it is polished. I guess after that I should send it to Japan for papers.

Here are photos of mine, with the "insert".
  6. Hello, I have seen lots of discussion on NBTHK certificates, I have visited the NBTHK website and generally surfed the web for answers. However, I am still unclear on the process for getting items assessed. I would be very appreciative if someone could give me a simple explanation of how someone in Canada would go about getting a blade or fittings assessed. Thanks for any help.
  7. The use of the shadow box on the top of the display stand is an attractive idea. Very nice.
  8. Great idea Andi and it would allow me to re-use a few old high E strings. Unless the sword resonated more with the B string, I suppose. Is there an inherent frequency in blades? Would they vary by period and maker? Any engineers out there?
  9. I would like one with a real coin slot. You could combine personal security with pan-handling.
  10. I like the shadow box idea. Thanks.
  11. Hello JAS, Sad to think that security needs to be your main issue on the Arctic Coast but I guess that is true everywhere. Thank you for mentioning the katana dansu. I was unaware of them. That looks like the perfect solution. Rob
  12. Thanks Brian, That is how I have my iaito and new wakizashi displayed now, on a wall-mounted stand. I guess that a shirasaya would be the choice for a blade alone but what about ways to display koshirae alone? Do people mount them in cases? Rob
  13. Are there good on-line or print resources for choices about displaying nihonto? I am curious about how people display swords complete with fittings as compared to blades and fittings separately.
  14. Thank you all so much for all the information. Now I have some studying to do to understand all the terminology. It certainly appears that this blade is well worth studying.
  15. Yes, the gold coloured rims are removable.
  16. Nice examples. The one tsuba would be a perfect match if it was for a wakizashi!
  17. I recently received a wakizashi and I am pursuing learning more about it. The saya that came with it fits too tightly and it appears impossible to fully sheath the sword (I have not tested whether it is actually impossible or not). Is it common for a saya to become too tight over time? Does anyone have advice on possible solutions?
  18. Thanks for the help. Here are some better photos of the fuchi kashira. I guess price is interesting as an indicator of relative value but I am not interested in selling the piece anyway. Yokohama dock special sounds ominous.
  19. Well, you learn something new every day.
  20. It is not glue. It appears to be some sort of shim of paper or possibly leather under the seppa. There is no sign of anything under the habaki but blade. I can easily remove the seppa but I do not know how to remove the habaki, it is tight and I don't want to damage anything. I will take some better close-ups when the sun comes back.
  21. I recently received this item as a gift and I am curious about it. I have no interest in using any information received for commercial purposes as I have no intention of selling it. I am new to the details of nihonto although not new to a strong appreciation for Japanese swords. I am unsure how useful these particular photos will be. Thanks for any comments.
  22. I just received a wakizashi that I am trying to find out more information on. Here are photos of its tsuba as well as its fuchi kashira. The fuchi kashira shows layering that I am told suggests Guri-Bori but I am new to the details of nihonto. I am interested in anything that anybody might have to say about it.
