JP Here is more info Roughly translate by using google translate:Currently, there are about 2.5 million Japanese swords registered in Japan. It has been 60 years since the registration certificate for firearms and swords was issued in 1951, but many Japanese swords are still registered. In the future, many Japanese swords that have not yet been registered will appear. I would like to check the registration certificate again at this opportunity. There are various cases where unregistered swords are discovered. Cases that come out of the attic or under the floor as a result of renovation of a building or when it is discovered from a storeroom, such as when moving or organizing a house. There are also cases where you have been handed over as a relic of a relative but you do not know the whereabouts of the registration card, or you still have the license issued by GHQ without knowing it. If something without a registration card comes out from your house, first go to the Life Safety Division of the police station in your area and apply for a discovery report. Sometimes the sword came out if I was organizing my home, so there are people who take it home once and try to report it again, but be sure to report it to the local police station where the sword was found Let's. In addition, the householder of the house where the sword came out applies for the discovery report, but depending on the circumstances, it may be a family member. However, please be aware that third parties are not able to apply for discovery notification. What you need to apply for a discovery report is a discovered sword and a seal. The application form for discovery notification is prepared in the Life Safety Division of each police station, so if you explain the place, date and time where the sword was discovered, it will create a discovery notification document. If you find a sword, do not sharpen it even if the sword is rusty. Some people are worried that if they go to the police station to report, they will be punished on the spot or the sword will be confiscated. Also, some people think that if you keep them in the house without taking them outside, you do not need to apply for discovery. Be sure to apply for a discovery report because it is a violation of the sword.

Bruce I found this article talking about the papered semi-forged(Nontraditional made) blade(Gunto),it's in Japanes . http://www.eiwado.co.jp/inquiry2.html Roughly transilated :If you have a semi-forged(Nontraditional made)sword it was once belong to family member who died in war, and then it will be treated specially ,please contact local Education Committee. So that might explain why some showa to got the registered. Between Showa 26-33 year1951-1958 , Many Gunto were registered as memento of the fallen soldiers (Subject "the remains of the bones". After Showa 33 year 1958, Goverment change the law, no longer issued the sword registeration license to these nontraditional made gunto . Trystan -

The Mysterious "w" Stamp!
BANGBANGSAN replied to Bruce Pennington's topic in Military Swords of Japan
Check these Traditional VS Simplified Kanji like 算 VS 祘,you will not know it's the same Kanji if you never learn how to write them. you can see the difference .It's tricky sometimes when people did't write it standard. -
Bruce found a 松 mark on Gunto Tang. It's in the Stamp chart. viii. ‘Matsu’ stamp found associated with tang batch or issue numbers. Significance unknown. Appears limited to blades (both signed and unsigned) found in 1944 pattern Army mounts. Rare. I saw this mark on some Type 30 bayonet.I think maybe it's from 松下電器 NATIONAL DENKI under TOKYO KOKURA ARSENAL's inspect.

Bruce This is NOT my sword, and I don't think it has signature on the tang.Give another thought,力 means Power, you can see that kanji on some flag and sennienbari. Trystan
