  1. It will be interesting to see how much this sells for. I have read opinions on here that this sellers items sell for a bit above market value. Matt
  2. The articles are from The Japanese Journal of Archaeology. Surprisingly there is a journal published in english. http://www.jjarchaeology.jp/(follow link to archives for more) Other archaeological resources are also published in english. The Japanese Archaeological Association has an english version of their site. http://archaeology.jp/en/history/although it doesn't appear to be active (no post since 2016). I wonder if they need some help over there with some sites Matt
  3. In the Imgur post it says he might be selling his collection when he is done. Does anyone know where? Matt
  4. Sorry about the poor pictures, I will make sure to improve my picture game in the future. Matt
  5. Thank- you very much. Matt
  6. Hello, I was wondering what the name on the belt is. Thanks Matt
  7. Thank-you for the answer. I assume the railway swords I've read about is for the army protecting the raiway opposed to the actual operators who have dirks. Matt
  8. Are the train conductor full swords, or just dirks? Matt
  9. Hello Everyone! I have been lurking around for about a year now and I figured it is about time I introduced myself a little more. I am 25 years old and as the username implies, I am an archaeologist in Ontario. My imagination isn't that great. My interest is mostly in Gunto, however, I find myself more and more attracted to ancestral blades in gunto mounts. I have always found myself attracted to Imperial Japan and I have started my collection of gunto this year. I find the history of the smiths and even sometimes the previous owners of the swords a lot more accessible and interesting than the artifacts and lands that I am used to working with. Over the past year or so I have received the advice and help from many members here and would like to thank everyone for the warm welcome. it makes what I think of as the "learning curve" a lot less daunting and more enjoyable. Thanks! Matt
  10. What I have learned over the past year or so is that there is always another sword, you just have to wait for it. Matt
  11. No idea, i regret not buying the one you put up a few months ago every week! Matt
  12. Unfortunately, my pockets were not deep enough Thank- you everyone for your help! it was fun. Matt

  14. Thank-you, I still can't find anything about the smith. Maybe I'm looking in the wrong places. Matt

  16. Hello, I am curious if the translation on this sword is correct since I cannot find anything on the smith name given. Thank you, Matt.
  17. Will post shortly! Good Suggestion! Thanks, Matt
  18. I couldn't find him either, it's curious. What does it mean? A fake signature? Something added later to make the sword worth more? Maybe some sort of fake name by another smith? Matt
  19. Uh oh, appears I might have brought some extra competition to the auction Thank you for your help guys Matt
  20. Thank-you for your response. I just couldn't find anything about that part about the sharpness, very interesting. Thank you for your help! Matt
  21. Hello forum members! I have been searching for a nice Kai Gunto for some time, and I think I have found one I maybe interested in, however I am unsure about the mei, or anything else. For example, I have never seen a signature refer to the sharpness of the blade like it does on this one. Through some research I know that the yamada family did sword testing, but signatures about the sharpness dont appear on Showa blades. This leads me on to believe it is a fake signature. https://www.ebay.ca/itm/KATANA-ANTIQUE-Japanese-LONG-SWORD-69-4cm-SIGNED-SAGEN-WWII-NAVY-GUNTO/142591654429?hash=item21331ffa1d:g:eigAAOSwpuFaFA3T Thanks Matt
  22. Over in the Translation board I received some help translating the tang. I have taken some more pictures of the rest of the sword and here it is > link to translation discussion http://www.militaria.co.za/nmb/topic/23919-help-translate-please/ > link to other pictures https://imgur.com/a/Fwuts Thank-you again everyone for their help! 23. I'll take a stab, although I am a noobie, this can be fun! My initial gut instinct was that it was a fake, just the white and yellow is just too white and yellow, but I cannot actually see anything wrong with the "production?" or the style of the tassel. Waiting to be corrected Matt
  24. Thanks a lot for all help! I will post the rest of the sword sooner or later! Matt
