  1. I have a few art pieces supposedly brought back by a GI at the end of WW2. The cardboard holder has seen better days, but it has done it's job as the art pieces themselves are still in very nice shape. I took a lot of pictures, so I may have to take a few posts up front. I will try to keep them in the order I tool the pictures to help reduce confusion. I am looking to sell these pieces, but don't know anything about them. If someone could help with the translation on the pieces that would be appreciated. I would like to sell to someone who would appreciate them and put them on display. Each piece is approx 18" tall. One being probably 26" or so. Thanks for the help. If you are interested in them you can PM me. The prints have been pressed into the paper. I tried to take a few close-up shots so you can see the impressions left behind. The last piece is a print on heavy silk I believe.
  2. Yeah, you just opened up a can of worms. Not going to go over well.
  3. If I had seen the sword you recently posted for sale earlier, I would have bought it. Nice looking, and doesn't break the bank. Not fast enough!
  4. I don't want to offend the guy. He knew the vet who brought it back quite well. He said it was brought back from Iwo Jima. If he has any way of providing provenance to that claim, then I'd be willing to make him a decent offer.
  5. Haha. Thanks guys. Yes, the kids want to go to college.......and I want to be able to retire someday as well! I'll pass on it. The quest for the next nihonto treasure continues.
  6. Cheezy....I know Here's another opportunity for me. Don't know who or what it is. Owner believes the blade is old but brought back from WW2 in officer mounts. He would like $1000 for it. Worthy? He is going to send me a full length photo.
  7. Here is the link to the follow-up thread Steve started after having been able to examine the sword in hand. I appreciate the time and effort effort that both he and Bob Benson made in helping to identify the smith. http://www.militaria.co.za/nmb/topic/21118-buzen-nakatsu-ju-fuji/?hl=tomoie

  9. This particular sword was discussed on this board back in November. I then sent it out to be examined by another member of this board.
  10. Picked this up back in October of 2016 at a local swap meet for $20. Momoyama Keicho Shinto perod from the Fujiwara Takada group and likely from a smith named Tomoie. It has good bones and will eventually receive a full polish in order to preserve it.
  11. I hadn't seen this post or I would have commented earlier. I am very thankful that Steve offered his evaluation of the sword at no cost. He had it in hand for several weeks and put a lot of time and effort in both researching the blade and performing a window polish in order to get a better understanding of it's pedigree. I was very happy with the results. As was mentioned, it is a worthy sword to preserve and at some point I would like to have a full polish completed and send it to shinsa. It's my first nihonto and I couldn't be happier with this $20 swap meet find.
  12. I'll be out early tomorrow morning trying to find another $20 TOMOIE!
  13. Thanks all for the input. I decided to pass on it.
  14. The last of the pictures available.
  15. Hi Steve, and Happy New Year. It's hard to say from the pictures. I can make out windows of what looks like irregular hamon up and down the length of the blade. Hopefully it wasn't damaged beyond repair. I didn't take the pictures and I'm not able to inspect it in person as it's in GA at the moment. I've included all pictures available to me at this time. The shape caught my eye and I was curious as to it's pedigree. It seems to definitely had some less than professional work done to it at some point in it's past. The overall length of the blade including tang is 35.5" with the cutting edge being 25.5".
  16. A few more pics of the blade and kissaki. Not sure of what it is I would be looking for. It looks to be in poor condition. Bad polish/sharpening job at minimum. Do you think this is a WW2 era blade?
  17. I need some assistance in deciphering the MEI. Thank you
  18. Is that a record price for a Nihonto? I've never heard of a sword being worth over 2 million dollars. It's an impressive, and beautiful piece for sure.
  19. I don't know if that is a good deal or not when it comes to the price realized. I will say that if the buyer felt that they were real from the pictures, and had the money to play with, it would be worth taking a shot at them as eBay does have a good return policy if you deem after conducting an in-hand inspection that they are fake.
  20. I've posted a couple of pictures of four streamers that were brought back from WW2. I was told that they were brought back from Hiroshima after the Atomic Bomb was dropped. Any assistance in translating is appreciated. I know the pictures aren't the best. The streamers are about 3ft long, so I needed to stand on a stool above them to get a decent picture.
  21. Can I ask who the togishi that performed the window is? Looks like nice work.
  22. I love your sign off" bringing nothing of real value to NMB since 2009". Good laugh.
  23. I am fully supportive of the comments made by both sides. I did enough research on my own to determine that it would not hurt taking Steve up on his offer to uncover a portion of the blade to assist in trying to get a better understanding of the origin of the Katana. The way I viewed it was quite simple. If I didn't take a chance and send it to him, I would never know anything more than what I already know about the blade...which isn't much. And, that bothers me. The blade could be something, or it could be nothing. I think we will all have a better picture here in a few weeks.
  24. What makes you refer to the blade as Showato?
