David H, if you want a pretty good one about US1100, including postage send me a message. It is not stainless steel but a Naotane made blade.

Dave M, great X-C collection.

My fascination with Japanese military stuff doesn't not stop at edged weapons. I have uniforms, flags, banners, documents, sake cups, hats, caps, belts etc. Japanese WW2 medals are especially beautiful and interesting. Including those sent to families of troops killed in action. Here are a few to enjoy.

Bruce, this is a shark skin saya. This has more a greenish army look about it. The fittings are blackened. Don't know how good the photo resolution is, but the nodules have a definite diamond shape.
-
Stephen you are correct. That's why I posted it . It looks like a man made imitation same. Many late war Kais have this material.
-
John, pictured are the tsukas of two Minatogawa swords. I guess the Minatogawas were pretty high class at the time. The one on the left with large nodules was an early war example, the one on the right later in the war. There is certainly a difference in quality.

Looking closely at some Kai Gunto, and noticed that on the shark skin saya type, often a feature is made of a large nodule. And usually in the same place on the saya. A couple of examples attached.

Not only that, he has YouTube video's where he talks like an expert on Gunto. When he can't find examples of his topic, he steals photos, like one of MINE from an NMB post. Damn, I should have copyrighted them. -
Ed, may not be a mon but just part of the decoration.

Hi (what is your name ?), gunto means army sword in Japanese. It is not a gunto. This is at best a civilian mounted sword that "may" have been taken to war. Do you know any history of this sword ?

I am a bit late jumping in here , but I am in agreement with David Flynn. This sword was made to carry and use, unlike others that were made as souvenirs .

Here are two styles of wrap used on this model sword. Menuki fully covered or partially covered . Ensure the khaki base tape is left on..... It is original to the model.. -

Yes could be wood . But you have come to the wrong place if you want support with your ambition to work on the blade and sharpen it as I think you are going to do . Members here are against back yard work on blades as it could/will destroy a blade , it's historical significance and value to a collector. Also remember this blade is not a true Nihonto, it is a machine made knockout for the war. And it may in fact not sharpen well as it is not the Samurai sword you think it is . You will have a wall hanger at best . -

Your rattan scabbard is to my knowledge original . I have owned and seen too many like it . And for them all to have Katsumasa blades is not a coincidence . I think they were made by an individual or small WW2 business that made these specially and cheaply, and obtained the blades from Katsumasa. -

To re-wrap handle , contact Fred Lohman or similar . Show him the colour and pattern of wrapping in my photos. It will cost a cost couple of hundred bucks. If done properly and the scabbard cleans up perfectly , the sword will be worth $800 max. A good investment ??? -

Read your article on paint removal. Don't do it that way !!!! Under the rattan is a metal scabbard that will rust. That article says use water, that is a NO NO. If you must use something use a solvent. Like acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, paint thinners, never water !! -

This is appropriate to put in the military sword section. Yours is a RARE original WW2 Japanese sword. Don't restore it! I have many varieties of these, all with Katsumasa blades. The handle tape is painted, and usually yellow , orange ito (binding). -
Denatured alcohol DOES contain water. Never use it . Isopropyl alcohol 100%, is good .

JP, never fear, on eBay there are many Zombie Apocalypse swords advertised for sale. Why don't you get one before they sell out.

OK, the tell tale sign of original seppa is not the number stamps , I have seen recent re-stamping . You can buy metal stamps. Look at the milled edge of the seppa, the Navy had a unique edge profile . Three more attached and the previous four to study closely .
