  1. I can't read the kanji without breaking out the books, but it looks gassaku ?
  2. Yimu, Having a quick look through koto-hen and shinto-hen : KUNISHIGE ENJU [EITOKU 1381 ND HIGO] CHKOT CHJSAKU He is the son of Enju Kuniie, his works include tant, ko gonome ha. Signature: KUNISHIGE Plate I: KUNISHIGE The only one I could find with niji mei.
  3. Hi Kevin, There are sites that offer this service to bid the last few seconds. I for one use this : http://www.justsnipe.com/ It also saves me from staying up at the middle of the night, and it prevents me from bidding more than I rationally would. You don't get caught up by the whole bidding frenzy.
  4. After looking at it a few times it does look similar to a crab claw ?
  5. Has a nice look and feel to it and it works nice and fast. Congrats!
  6. As an absolute beginner book I would recommend the following : It is very visual and covers the basics (also in English), I also believe there's a revised version nowadays ?

  8. Could be this one (I think it's Toshimitsu as well) although I don't have my Fujishiro's with me to compare mei at the moment : SUKESADA GODAI [HREKI 1751 BIZEN] SHINT CHJSAKU He was called Yokoyama Hichibei. He changed to Toshimitsu in Hreki Ninen (1752), and died at the age of 85 in Meiwa Hachinen (1771). Signatures: BIZEN KUNI TOSHIMITSU BIZEN KUNI J OSAFUNE SUKESADA
  9. Hi Steve, Norishige has nothing to do with it, that was just the smith's name from Darcy's example
  10. Here's a bit from Darcy's excellent site which might put it into context :
  11. Hinoto Ushi is the 14th year of the 60 year cycle (which began at 1924) Showa 12th year is the same seeing showa began at 1926 So they both mean 1938 - it's not uncommon to have both descriptions For more info : http://www.jssus.org/nkp/kanshi.html

    Big Flaw

    Here's a link to the auction : http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=150481989233&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT
  13. I did file a report with eBay - not really holding my breath on that one
  14. Seems like a deal - but this wasn't grandfather's sword ... more like fwic2803's :-) Location of item is US, seller location is UK and in the description (taken directly from a well known eBay seller) it says they will export it from Japan You'd think they'd at least go through a minimal effort to get their story straight ... http://cgi.ebay.com/Japanese-Sword-Yoshimichi-Beautiful-Grain-NBTHK-/230515780856?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0
  15. I was very disappointed that I wasn't able to go due to other more pressing matters. So for the pics !
  16. Got mine today. I flipped it open for some perousing, and before I knew it I was 10 pages further. Compelling read and a job very well done !!!
  17. You can also order them here : http://www.toukenkomachi.com/index_en_books.html
  18. Hi Chuck, While these tsuba are similar in design they're far from identical, so they're just based on the same theme, which is something very common with tsuba.
  19. My guess would be a stylised Fudo Myo-o
  20. Here's a previous gimei/shoshin discussion on the same smith : http://www.militaria.co.za/nmb/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=5248 If you do a search on this forum, you'll be sure to find more references to this smith.
  21. Amazon says my copy will ship 1 September ... Now that's a long wait !
  22. A very good and worthwhile addition to this already informationabundant forum !

    Gassan Sadakazu

Brian, I have a small collection of Sadakazu mei, but the ones with hotstamp (that I have) seem to be made 1869-1871. I have a gap in my collection from 1872-1887, so the timespan could be larger on that side.
  24. Hi Jason, If you want to do some light reading on the subject : http://www.jssus.org/nkp/japanese_sword_laws.html It's an article by Guido Schiller who's not a stranger to this forum
  25. Hi Morita-san, I bought 昭和大名刀図譜 They were very helpfull and also willing to ship it to Europe. Even with shipping this set was very cheap compared to some nihonto bookstores.
