Finished My First Urushi Lacquer Project...

True that, ive heard that years long cured urushi objects could give some people a reasonably nasty reaction! -
Finished My First Urushi Lacquer Project...
remzy replied to PhoenixDude's topic in General Nihonto Related Discussion
Wow i dont understand why so many of you seem affected by it, i tested legit urushi on my hand a few years ago and it never did anything, but then again, it doesnt mean anything, i might just be Lucky. Great table finish, love the rich dark red Brown color. -
Ive bought a nice Tadakuni Wakizashi from Aoi Art about 4 years ago, no problems with getting it shipped to Canada.

Terrific job on the tsuba, I thought it might have been a goner after seeing the first picture but you were gentle with it (even if using chemical, concidering the circumstances) and it shows! As for the brass, i dont know, liver of sulfur perhaps? its a bit drastic and will make silver black, but i dont know about brass, might be worth a try, since the patina on it is already gone.

My recent experience with the JSSC...
remzy replied to remzy's topic in General Nihonto Related Discussion
I did not publicly states the facts about my experience because someone else did so in the past and that person has been threatened by lawsuit... I never feared such things but it is important to remain neutral here if we want this board to remain feud-free. However, I will just say that it is easy for someone to pop in and call bullshit, but considering that person has only made two posts in the last couple of years makes you wonder the motive being the action. With that, perhaps this thread should be locked? As I fear it might turn into something rather silly, quite fast. -
My recent experience with the JSSC...
remzy replied to remzy's topic in General Nihonto Related Discussion
Done Brian, I know that John, that is why Ive remained as vague and generic as possible whilst still stating an opinion based on my recent experience, it is up to the reader to determine if they want to believe me or not and we can all agree that everyone is free to make their decisions. Regards, Remy -
Greetings, First I would like to precise that what I am writting here is my opinion only and that I have nothing to do with the Nihonto Message Board operation or any of its staff, however I felt it had to be laid out there, because when I did searches I couldnt find any info regarding the JSSC credibility or the credibility of the owner, Fred Fimio. Info which might have saved me money and alot of hassle. I know that for some of you it is common knowledge but for some, it isnt. I would personnaly like to discourage anyone seeking a knowledgable Nihonto appraisal from seeking the assistance of the Japanese Sword Society of Canada or its owner/president, Fred Fimio. I will not go into details of my past experience with it, as I want this post to remain as neutral and away from being defamatory, this is my opinion based on personnal experience. Do what you want with this piece of personnal opinion. In the event that this infringe on some unwritten rules here, I am sorry, I didnt mean to. I only meant to inform and spread my opinion around, I would have appreciated that kind of warning some time ago, myself. Kind regards, Remy

You are right, but I got carried away... I highly dislike being played as a fool and for a moment I thought that i was dealing with an expert, which made me a fool and I dont react well to it, apologises. Im thinking about sending it to you Chris but i fear the wrong mei would get the blade flagged as gemei and nobody would look at it from that point on, do you think theres a way to have it hidden such as in kentai? hehe. anyways, thanks for your time guys, I appreciate it.
-
What piss me off is, I didnt think it was kanemitsu, but what I wanted to know was WHO actually made it and I never got that. I might flip it on ebay and sell it as is and be done with it, this is getting frustrating and it is leading nowhere. Regards,
-
And how would i go about doing that? I live in Canada. Thanks
-
Hi Adam, I am not good enough to distringuish the difference between both Mitsu kenji, is it because two of the little strokes are not at the exact same place? I didnt think mei needed to be this identical, imagine punching perfectly identical mei by hand for over 50 years, youd guess some would come out different. Thanks for your reply either way Regards
-
Hmmm I am confused because, some time ago I bit the bullet and sent this blade for appraisal to Fred Fimio who has over 60 years of experience in nihonto, far more than I could dream to obtain in my lifetime... and the according to him "the mei appears genuine" and he attribute it to Bishu Osafune Kanemitsu. I know some of you said it was most likely gemei so I am puzzled... Someone mentioned it wasnt worth restoring while Fred suggest it would, any other imput? Regards, Remy

Indeed, that is where i am talking about.

I hesitate to speculate based on (no insult meant) poor photos quality. It has led me to blunder in the past... but generally speaking, the sugata is forged by the smith, yours look like it has been altered, unless that is uncommon sugata that i have never seen before, since i am no way near being an expert on the matter, i could be wrong. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/c ... lade_5.jpg See how the shinogigi gets thinner after the hi on the picture and flows towards the boshi, keeping the width of the shinogiji constant towards the point. That is what i meant, *BUT* maybe its just me imagining things. Regards,
-
Am i the only one to think there is something wrong with the shinogiji? aside from the wrinkles... Are both side of the blade identical in shape? Regards,
