Australian Army intelligence regarding Japanese swords
Bencld replied to PNSSHOGUN's topic in Military Swords of Japan
David. I’ve heard variations of this for the last 35 years or so from Aussie soldiers. Obviously there were never enough to go around so a raffle was the fairest method. Two swords I got in Bendigo were won by this method according to the diggers I bought them off. Some of the swords I bought were gained by “other” methods, combat, skulduggery! chris -
It’s not a willy jeep spring is it ? Made to trick some sucker out of their money during the war !!

Kanetoshi ? Looks to be wwII blade.

Hi all. Just wondering peoples opinions on orikaeshi mei? Was it done on swords considered to be worthwhile as it seems like a lot of work to go through just for an ordinary blade ? I now understand why my nakago looks like it does after reading this article as a bizen sukesada nakago I would expect to be a bit wider/stumpy? http://www.ksky.ne.jp/~sumie99/suriage.html Is it possible that the rest of this mei may have been shaved off as described in the above article? I have done a fair bit of searching and there are not too many niju mei SUKESDA around?

Shirasaya for my Sun-Nobi Tanto
Bencld replied to ckaiserca's topic in General Nihonto Related Discussion
Looks like what we call fiddleback. Comes from the base of a tree that over a long time the weight compresses the tree into these wavy patterns. Dressed in our hardwoods here looks very nice. Lovely shira saya btw! -

Thanks all. Interesting. You can’t bank on standard in this game! My main thought in the difference between the two was that the flat wrap was a cheaper easier/quicker way to do it than the twisted one? Don’t know if that is true or not? Chris.

Hi all. Any clarification on the different style of ito wrap ? Apologies if this has been covered but I have long covid and it’s a chore to do anything so I didn’t do a search !! Mine is the top one and has the twisted wrap and the bottom one is a flat wrap ?

Ray, thank you again. No papers, so gimei ! That’s how it goes especially if it came out of Japan at some point. The two character mei is on the ura side of the nakago which is unusual I believe ? Chris. -

Hi Ray, thanks for that, yes it does. I bought it from the US so it was sent from Japan to the US then here! More well travelled than me ! Im guessing there is no other relevant info on the card? Does it look like the original one? chris -
Hi all. Found this at the bottom of one of my sword bags. Looks like the original one that should of stayed in Japan ! Just wondering what it may say ! Thanks all.
