In that condition you would sell it as a project piece and such would be it price. Also,if you like it why it has to go?Your wife has to understand militaria its a hobby just like any other else!

Yeah,i like it,not a treasure but could be completed with some cheap jingasa and kote, and its simply gonna be a decorative piece for display,im not a katchu collector yet Thanks

Hi all, mainly collector of nihonto and fittings, but now i would like to purchase a modest samurai armor to place on a huge vitrine i have decorated with sakura flowers,I think it would make a great display and i think i have found something that might do the job. It's on ebay pick-up only but very close to where i live. Unfortunately the seller listed the pieces individually so the kabuto and kote have gone for good, but i could get everything else for around 500$,but as its probably a foot soldier armor by the hara-ate-do,i could complete it with a jingasa. My first impression is that is far from being a museum piece and some parts are quite beaten up,but as i'm not katchu collector and i simply want it for display i would like to hear opinions from experts on it before purchasing, Thanks Sinceresly

No,my comments were simply on the sword blade, tsubas and fittings of the mounting(koshirae) have always being swapped and changed so they are most likely from different periods. Going wild on speculations(nothing accurate) i would say the blade might be shinto(no idea), tsuba might be heianjo school but with the inlays missing, and the tsuka looks like decent late edo

With a o-suriage blade(shortened) we have not the tang shape nor the original blade sugata,so for it identification we only have the blade activity wich unfortunately is well-hidden under a layer of rust. Identification of this blade is on a dead end, unless you decide to have it polished(ask first opinion to experts, hagire could be around the corner) Sinceresly

Decided to mount it on a waki koshirae to see if its a tsuba. It seems indeed to be a tsuba of the same style, However,it doesn't look as good as the silver one, maybe it might be just the contrast with the rest of the koshirae, but gladly surprised overall with this find

According to what Jean said, i have a similar fitting but in brass, with work in the edge and sekigane, and i always thought it was just a super thick seppa, but seeing this kind of mounting, could i assume it is a tsuba? Is there a way to make the distinction for sure?
-
Also,katana/tachi gimei might have been added on mumei katanas/tachi,so you must be very acquainted with the age schools and sword construction to be sure 100% and make the distinction with no doubts
-
Didn't found the user nor the daisho, maybe he might have sold it already.
-
Yep,Geraint explained me widely the importance of condition, don't worry, i will be more careful when considering tsuba for the collection in the future, and again, thanks you all Sinceresly

Much thanks,i will follow your wise advise Sinceresly

I was about to close a deal on fleabay but i still havent much confidence. The piece look quite decent imo: -Amida yasuri -silver sekigane -Brass hitsu ume -Maybe tosho? However i have also noticed that a lot of patine is missing and appear to be some flaws, but the rust in the ana's indicate it mustnt be a really modern piece. I would like to hear some other opinions about it before buying it Is this one: http://www.ebay.es/itm/424-Japanese-Antique-TSUBA-of-Sword-Samurai-Edo-Period-Iron-/291845674512?hash=item43f35b9610:g:zZ8AAOSw3mpXIYyW Thanks in advance folks,

A lot of chinese influence in these, Jade is quite important in chinese culture as it symbolised wisdom,power,wealth... But overall,it was like a status symbol, so it wouldn't be surprising to find some of these, wich were most likely been mounted in swords owned by chinese who moved to Japan. but i would still say they are quite rare or at least uncommon, Peace,
-
Yet, even if uncommon on Japanese swords, there have been a lot of historical jian swords with jade fittings, and Jian swords were also deadly weapons,no toys, so why so serious about them in Japanese swords? Pd:In Iaido i ment to use on individual katas not parry or anything, i know what jade is
-
I'm talking about doing it on a practical katana,Iato, of course it wouldn't be original nor good quality and wouldn't have place on my Tsuba collection. And by the way,if you add a nakago ana, ANYTHING can be a tsuba, just like those early tsubas made with the back of chinesse mirrors Just a different approach, there is no accounting for tastes. But yeah, the main problem here would be avoiding the fracture of the Jade.

Even more,around 150, didn't see that coming

And should if its yours,it might be an important work, similar double blade length bo-hi are common on Honami work and other shinto smiths -
Cordialement

Beautiful, but pretty uncommon, noticeable artist freedom just as with the samegawa or wood laquered tsuba. Also thanks for showing this, I got the idea of buying one of those modern cheap chineese jade pendant and putting a nakago ana on it. Has someone attempted this before? I think that done correctly, the result might be a great unique piece.

Just noticed, the ebay seller and the presumably winner of the buyee bid is located in Japan, so yeah,he will make benefits, around 40-70$ i would say, but i don't think he is the same guy from buyee
