  1. Thanks, I appreciate the feedback everyone.
  2. Perhaps my example wasn't very good. I am mainly wondering how you differentiate a good sword from an amazing sword.
  3. Hello everyone, Although I am relatively new to the hobby, I can generally differentiate a well crafted nihonto from an average one. However, I cannot seem to grasp the differences in craftsmanship of a spectacular sword, from a 'very good' sword. For example, what are the differences I should be looking for (aside from the prestige of the name) if I were to compare a Muramasa vs an exemplar juyo sword? thanks in advance.
  4. It looks like a genuine sword to me, but there's been some pretty heavy modification to the kissaki. There seems to be no hamon on the tip, leading me to believe the original tip must have been completely reshaped. The kissaki also doesn't seem to have that crisp geometry expected in a Japanese sword. I see a lot of recommendations for restoring it, but I think the cost outweighs the benefit. I'd probably just appreciate it for what it is. The condition and polishing aren't perfect, but it's okay.
  5. Awesome, thanks guys.
  6. Hey everyone, I was wondering what were your opinions of this site. I find it very convenient to use, it lets me cross reference mei and smiths across different books. However, its resources seem to be quite incomplete. Is this the general consensus? How reliable is the information?
  7. I was on the amazon waitlist for that book too, but it never got fulfilled so I just went out and bought it second hand. Is it not fulfilled anymore because it's no longer being printed?
  8. Thanks for the great information, everyone! Also, great detail, Ken. Thank you for that.
  9. Ah, that makes sense. A shift away from mounted combat would've definitely shortened a lot of blades.
  10. I was wondering, for what kinds of reasons would one opt to shorten the nakago? I do know that there are instances of swords like long tachi shortened to meet rules and regulations, but were there reasons in terms of practical applications?
  11. Great Article!
  12. Hello Everyone, Just starting out with this hobby, currently flipping through some books and trying to get a feel for things. Hoping to learn a bit more here. Many of my google searches on nihonto have led me to this message board, so I figured it's a good idea to make an account and look around. thanks.
