The Nihonto Learning Curve

Picked up a old wak in rough condition. In need of a little help on saya translation. The last two pictures are from the opposite side and are very hard to make out. Thanks Charlie

The show was excellent as usual in my opinion. Fred does a wonderful job organizing and setting up. Sales seemed to be a touch slower for me but still decent. There was a large amount of quality tsuba out there. I picked up a couple for my mokume tsuba collection. All and all I'll be back next year. Chuck S.

Owning Nihonto, Care And Handling Tips

I was hoping for another Nigerian prince scammer.... Well I guess polish prince scammer instead. -
There was a little stretching of the truth on lengths also. Showa had a rayskin army sword and was calling it Katana. It's was wak length based on his measurements. Just have to be extra careful on eBay like usual. Charlie S.

I believe the mon is Ando if you wondered. Don't have my mon book right in front but, I remember since the leaf is other direction than the kato mon (I'm looking for a Kato mon) Charlie S. -
I hear you Chris. This subject is not a short journey but a lifetime adventure. Glad I can spend it with guys here in the forum minus yulian... It's amazing when you look back with more knowledge at a sword that didn't seemed like a deal at the time. I do it constantly, but mostly of the swords I looked at early on, belong to now friends of mine. Other collections I realized are complete trash now. At the time they seemed like deals since they were cheap. Cheers Charlie

Damascus Blade Auctioning As Japanese
charlie1 replied to Bruce Pennington's topic in Military Swords of Japan
Its getting really bad with most auction sites. A local auction house around me had a out 20 swords, some traditional blades and Showa pieces. Descriptions done by a good swords guy with everything we look for. Auctions goes off well. The next two auctions they have are mostly Chinese fakes and rusty trash pieces and no reliable sword descriptions. Just fired me up they get one decent auction and try to cheat people the next auction. I even talked with the poeple around their descriptions and got the cold shoulder. I tried to turn as many away as possible, because alot of locals ask me if the auction is any good. I give them my honest opinion and some think I'm shying them away so I can buy them. Sometimes you can't win. -

There is a difference in the early mounts with the "pinned" fittings. Most don't even notice when they are pinned in except when one is missing. The paint tone is lighter tone paint. From experience the pinned fittings are earlier and paint is different. It's not explained in the Dawson. I misspoke in my first message general mounts (going off memory) but the fittings are premium with gold trim. Please notice the my second message with "general tassel".

Sorry for the delay. Page 158-159 of the Dawson book. Type 94 with general grade tassel and lower removable ashi. The one I was studying has early type smooth paint. The one pictured in the Dawson book is the later paint type. Not too many examples with these type of quality fittings. Just asking if someone is kind enough to share pictures of a example. Cheers Charlie
