  1. Bullets, especially military jacketed bullets, have tremendous penetrating power. I would have thought that there would be a huge deformation into the steel of the blade if a bullet hit it. Enough power to crack the blade but not dent it seems odd, in my opinion
  2. The tip doesn't look correct. Has it been re-shaped ?
  3. If shipping only a blade: -wrap it tightly in paper -secure it to a wooden board though the handle hole with a wood screw -tape the other end and middle to the board to prevent lateral movement -wrap and ship
  4. I live in Canada and never had any problem receiving my antique sword blades from other countries, although never from Japan. 1) make sure the sender describes them as "antique" on the custom forms (modern swords used for protection are seen as weapons and not allowed) 2) list the value for customs tax purposes to be paid by the receiver.

    Help With Tsuka

idea 1: thin plastic tube taped to a vacuum cleaner nozzle. The thin tube would be small enough to reach the paper. idea 2: a chop stick with sma;; amount of hot glue dabbed on the end. Slide the glue/stick into the tsuka and let it solidify on the paper. pull out. If all else fails give to me free.

  7. Removing the grip and showing a photo of the tang will go a long way in determining authenticity.
  8. Blade is showing some nice hamon but would never be worth sending to a professional polisher. Still, for $200. well worth the money. [/url]
  9. I agree my blade is likely made from a once larger blade. Am I doing it damage by giving it a more traditional profile of the nakago ?. (I realize I will need to watch for heat buildup when removing material. ) What is more appropriate: leaving it as is or revising it to a traditional shape ?
  10. Would a correcting reshape of the nakago be more tapered towards the end and rounded at the corners ?
  11. total blade length is currently 297 mm or a bit under 12 " and 24mm (1" wide at the widest point.)
  12. I pulled the trigger on this knife and was happily surprised to find it to have a very nice hamon after a bit of polishing. It is still likely a newer blade (handle not very corroded) but the layering in the steel and the irregular hamon make it collectable to me. I'll post pics even though the blade is not completed.
  13. Is there a Japanese sword show in the Detroit , USA or Toronto , Canada area ? I live between the two large cities.
  14. I have been offered this Tanto for $200 but the seller cannot guarantee anything about it. It looks correct to me. Does it appear to be genuine or modern ? Blade is 14 " ; looks like a bridal tanto to me
  15. Looking for antique junk blades and swords. Must be : 1) pre-ww2 ; older the better 2) authentic Japanese nihonto 3) no fire damaged swords 4) some hamon visible 5) under $400 Please PM for contact info.
