  1. Could we get some pictures of the blade as well... or are those the images in Brian's post that have been corrupted?
  2. I was told by Andreas that the package was going to be insured. I've sent him a PM asking him to start the claims process... I hope the insurance covers the cost of goods damaged in transit...
  3. I don't think that's possible, I'm afraid. The saya that it shipped with had the far side sawed off so that the blade would fit. It was only included for limited protection of the blade during transit and offers no protection to the tip- which sticks out well over a centimeter.
  4. I have read on Richard Stein's "THE Japanese SWORD GUIDE" website that sword canes have been of inferior quality and that they were thin. This one seems really odd... Regards :-) There are exceptions to every rule, I suppose. I had read that they were often of inferior quality... that doesn't mean that a few custom pieces weren't brilliant.
  5. Hindsight is always 20/20 I suppose... I appreciate all of the feedback y'all, and I'll see about showing this blade to Mr. Benson as soon as possible.
  6. Well Brian said that you can have a polisher fix it most likely... I'm not going to blame the seller for this kizu... I'm more apt to blame DHL.
  7. This is the best pic I could take...
  8. Naw... I don't think so. It has ware, sure, and I'm sure it's most recent polish didn't help that fact... But I don't see acid etching here. What makes you think that?
  9. I recently purchased an O-Wakizashi from a member of this site. I just got it today... and the first thing I saw was a tiny hole in the side of the box. Oh... S***... Sure enough, the tip now has a slight bend/curl roughly two or three millimeters in length. Pictures are forthcoming. Is a (slightly) bent tip a fatal flaw? I looked at the flaws link, and it only mentions chipped tips.
  10. Wow... beautiful... Where did you find it?
  11. Nooooooo... it's been sharpened!
  12. That's my dilemma though... his prices are so low that it really isn't a risk at all... Good replicas go for double what this guy is asking. And with no reserve? I'm so very very tempted...
  13. So, would using powder on a gunto blade be a good idea?
  14. It's just that they all look so detailed... the closeup shots are amazing! Which is what makes them seem so fake to me... they almost look like they were freshly minted and then aged to look older than they are... I hope that they're real though... if they are, there's some good buys to be had off of this guy...
  15. It was recommended to me that I purchase a new tsuba for an o-wakizashi that I purchased from another NMB member. Something with a bamboo pattern to go with the bamboo leaf menuki. I've found one at a price that's too good to be true... please tell me if this is a great buy, or a great scam... http://cgi.ebay.com/073-Japanese-Copper ... dZViewItem :?
  16. Thank you AndreasU... I was curious about how deep of a polish I was going to need...
  17. Polishing probably had alot to do with it. It's amazing to see some "before and after" shots that some polishers put up on their websites. But you also have to remember that many of these swords were made when their wasn't any war going on. Many more were made for civilians as self defense weapons and never had to be used. I'm sure there are a TON of swords we see in pristine condition that saw action, but alot never got the chance.
  18. Holy crap... that guy just copied and pasted stuff from the links on this site! I gotta be honest though, the blade looks pretty good to my untrained eye... Kinda wondering why the tsuba is an obviously Chinese dragon though... and why the tsuka looks like it was wrapped in shoelaces. Yeah... it was the cotton tsuka-ito that made me suspicious...
  19. Pete, you are right, that would be a start point at least. I wish I knew Japanese; the language is also another barrier in the communications. Thanks, Babel Fish is your friend. I use it to translate Japanese websites all the time. It doesn't fix the grammar differences, but it will do wonders towards helping you communicate.
  20. Wow, that looks great! What made you decide to go with that color of leather?
  21. Just guesses, (obviously not very educated ones) no accusation was meant.
  22. Oh thank you. Not sure why, but I thought that saya had to be more form fitting for some reason...
  23. ... Or maybe it's fake? Looks alot like acid etching... And the guy didn't sound 100% legit... "Cutting blade is still very sharp!" How would he know? I thought Nohonto collectors never touched the edges of their blades...
  24. I was under the impression that the opposite was true... After you get a blade polished, wont that greatly affect the fitting- particularly in the saya?
  25. Really? That's the problem with Bob's website: Not a price to be found on the whole thing. Everything is on an individual basis... which might be a good thing for me. Would you recommend changing out anything other than the saya? For some reason I had it in my head to replace the tsuka as well... Not sure why, now that I really look at it...
