  1. it is quite amazing. if this happened here in the US there would be non stop news of looting, shootings, and such. I hate to say it but it would be outright anarchy here in the States. bravo to the Japanese people. to show such composure and discipline... I hope for quick recovery. god speed Japan.
  2. I did not know the man but remember some of his posts over at swordforum. very sad indeed. my condolences to the family.

    Child's Sword

what's the measurement of the blade? looks to be in really good condition. very nice!
  5. Jumanji Yari! I love Jumanji yari! Thanks for sharing.
  6. Couldn't you just order the Koto books(Nihonto Koza Vol. II, III, IV) from Mr. Watson direct? http://www.afuresearch.com/ Last time I exchanged e-mails with him he had the whole set of Nihon to Koza in stock (granted it was a while back)...
  7. I have a Kanefusa that I'm 99% sure that it's oil quenched. Really interesting looking hamon too. Looks like 3 cedar but only 2, and has a dripping effect to it. Anyway, the hamon on your Kanefusa don't look like mine at all. Maybe water quenched but not made of tamahagane? texture and feel of the steel is very reminiscent to my blade. Anyway, I'm newb so take it for what it is. Just my observation. Ether way, your blade looks really nice. Love the kissaki and horimono.
  8. just received my copy today. It got to me in less then a week. Arrived in perfect condition to boot. Excellent quality content and print. my hat off to everyone involved. Thank you for making this available. can't wait til the next volume! warning to Mr. Benson/Brockbank... If you see a crazy looking asian guy at the SF token-kai chasing you down screaming "sign my book please!"... um...that be me... :D
  9. Hey, thanks! Yeah, I was kinda wondering how it was possible to date the blade to such an exacting date without a mei but some of you guys have surprised me in the past so... Amount of knowledge and skill some of you possess, it's down right scary! :D I guess there were some paperwork or e-mail transmission between the former owner and Mr. Tan so I'm hoping he can find it. It would be interesting to see what it says... As Mr. Darcy pointed out, possible typo somewhere... Cool, possibly one of the earlier swords in wakizashi format. Thanks again. Any other info/opinion I'd welcome and appreciate.
  10. At the suggestions of Mr. Darcy/Jean, here are pics of my wak. Before I even start, as per rules, information herein will be not used for commercial use. I'm just trying to get more info/opinion on my new acquisition. I got his on a trade and was told by the gentleman I did the trade with, Alfred Tan, gentleman he bought it from dated it to Aug 1351. It's out of polish, has couple chips in the ha. Evidence of sword strike on mune and shinogi. :D Looking forward to getting it restored. Unless of course if Ted(Tenold) tells me it's not worth a polish. specs: 21 3/4" nagasa 1 1/4" motohaba 3/4" @ yokote 1/4" munemachi pics: Incase you are wondering... Ted opened a rather large "window" on one side.(done for the previous owner) Not sure if you can tell by my poor picture but the mukugiana looks to be punched from both sides. I read somewhere that this was a common practice in Koto era but what do I know... I sometimes see a pic of this angle of the blade so fwiw... Koto? Shinto? Any info and/or opinions welcome. Thank you.
  11. Thanks again Mr. Jean/ Mr. Darcy. I'll try to get some photos up tomorrow in brighter setting. I have one of those super tiny digitals that don't do too well in low light. I do have atleast a pic of the mei up on another thread titled "translation help please". Thanks again.
  12. No date on the ura unfortunantely... I got this on a trade and according to the gentleman I'm trading with, it was dated to aug. of 1351 by Alfred Tan, gentleman he bought it from. So, I don't know if this is good or bad. <----- newb :D Thank you.
  13. Thank you Mr. Jean / Mr. Darcy. Well, I spoke too soon I guess. At the time of my post I didn't have the blade in hand. It arrived about couple hours after my posting here. The sword does not have a second set of mei on the ura side for date. I miss understood what the gentleman I'm trading with was saying. It was dated by Alfred Tan, the gentleman whom he bought it from. I posted a pic of the mei on another thread thinking maybe I might have missed something on the omote side. this was of course before my conversation with the said gentleman I'm trading with cleared things up. Were any work of Sukesada from around 1351 any good?... generally speaking of course. The blade is badly in need of polish so I'm not sure if posting pics of it would do any good. It's a wakizashi with about 22" nagasa. Anyway, don't want to hijack this thread. Thanks again for your help and info.
  14. Mr. Wilson, thank you very much!
  15. Thank you so much.
  16. Curious... Do these Sukesada mei with a date mean anything compaired to Sukesada mei with out a date? (quality of make?) I have a Bishu Osafune Sukesada with a date(1351) that I got in a trade... Due to "Bishu" it means it's not very good right? Don't mean to hijack tiffiny's thread. Just curious while we are on the subject of Sukesada. Thanks.
  17. sheesh... estimated worth of the blade was only 1.6 Mil... I'm still trying to get my head around this... up for auction by the family yet bought by someone within the family for 4X the estimated value... Those wacky French...
  18. I've had good results with Noxon. Though I'm not sure how it relates to "cleaning" nakago... always been told it's a no no... Oh, my first post... <--- new guy. hello! I'm humbled by the knowledge here.
