  1. I suppose it is mainly important if the sword is stored for longer periods at a time. The lacquer work is good against keeping for instance rain out but also air, where shirasaya leave some room for the contents to 'breath'. However I do fall in with wanting to store something correctly I also see the merits of realizing shipping is always a risk of sorts.. it's a conundrum 🙃 (as you already stated).
  2. I would contact the seller see if they can refund part of said sword to cover the cost of having one made (if that is cheaper and returning it is out of the question).
  3. Looks very nice. Now the search for a kogai begins!
  4. Adding sori, the amount of curvature would be helpful too. Appears to be a genuine Japanese blade, that's as far as I'll go. To me it does not look like a ko kissaki, leaning to chu.
  5. Thank you Kyle, Jay, I only asked out of interest. Regardless of age it's honestly one of the better pieces I have ever seen especially the purple (bordering on magenta), inlay is exceptionally beautiful to me, that and the snowflake design is one of my favorite themes.
  6. I was also caught off guard with the opening, where the store owner speaks English very well. I must say the whole production is really impressive and interesting (albeit for a small group of people). And to spotlight a foreigner I think was quite pleasant and also shows how much it means when someone is so invested in another country's history. All in all I was super surprised throughout the video
  7. Hi Micheal, Thank you. I think I did but had not connected the two events In my mind yet. I went ahead and watched another video while I really should go to sleep Oh I think while reading the topic I didn't watch the video at that time because it always sidetracks me, which then gets me distracted.
  8. Hi, I can't remember the last time I so thoroughly enjoyed a video as just now with this video. I may be a bit late to the party but wow - best 15 minutes of my week. Also, i would've posted in the youtube section but its been locked.
  9. Stunning item at a price to rob a diner for. Absolutely lovely item and if i were better off I'd grab it in an instant. Out of interest, do you have a translation for the paper? Is there any indication of when it was made?
  10. Very exciting, congratulations! Who does the Hozon paper state the smith is/attribution made to? Nicely mirrored hamon.
  11. I just read this post and then visited Aoi and one stood out. Seems that's a common sequence of events here🙃 https://www.aoijapan.com/img/sword/2021/21457-2.jpg Apologies due to different link I did t realize it's already up there, feel free to delete.
  12. Dear Francois, thank you for sharing that album. Man what a bunch of weird weapons! Edit in bold
  13. Hi David, I didn't think you meant it in that way. I should've expanded my post a little, adding that especially on longer blades bohi had the primary (or secondary depending on your point of view), function to lighten a blade (I'm of the opinion that the I beam functionality was a secondary thing). Which makes me think a blade without bohi particularly would be closer to perfection in the eyes of the smith. One could counter with one intending bohi from the start thus forging a beefier form. It's I guess something that one might, with more study change his or her opinion on later. I suppose I'm also biased having no swords with any carving (apart from a signature🙃), not to mention I know next to nothing.
  14. Guess I'm in the minority actually appreciating a blade without horimono or bohi, mainly when katana or tachi. Many times I've seen bohi where I thought how the blade would look without.
  15. Might be me but the link seems to be not working.
  16. Briefly checks and proceeds to list 100+👏 Nice
  17. It doesn't but I was just interested in others their ideas on it. Could it be a reused kabuto perhaps? I have no real knowledge on the subject, can imagine they'd reuse damaged armor just like swords that lost hamon through fires.
  18. https://www.aoijapan.com/skull-head-kabuto-mumei/ I've never seen anything close to this before. From the description I'm not sure but assuming it's a iron helmet with lacquer or paper mache additions? And I'm curious as to what others think about it. It might look pretty gnarly with a mempo dangling like a lower jawbone
  19. Very cool pickup! Any backstory or information on how and where you found it? I agree with all the above Edit: it always kills me to see blades laying on tables, couches or even the floor. Please! Put a piece of soft cloth or pillow under the blade if you're making photographs or just want to put it down.
  20. Well said Geraint. Welcome Joe!
  21. Bump Apologies for the bump. I'm still hopeful someone more experienced and versed in kanji can make out a meaning and/or translation out of the last 4 photos, the presumed poem on the outside. I'm really curious as to what it might say and whether or not it's related to the tea ceremony or something else. If someone figures it out I'll be forever in debt👏😌
  22. Your making me blush! I'm pleased it arrived without issues and to have it go to a good home. And your display looks lovely. Could you post a photo of the whole cabinet? Would love to see it.
  23. Thomas, i'm sure i've seen that one before. However I can't remember where right now. Something in the back of my mind keeps saying Ichimonji, any chance you have more information? Sword with a story.
  24. I think that by that time this forum has been archived and will (still), be regarded as thé number one source of information regarding real and fake swords and a statue of Brian made in memorial.
  25. Right, I see. Too bad
