Hi guys, so sorry for my lack of participation(kept a low profile at the weekend), but i am sure you had fun without me ! 1. I should really quit my job as soon as possible to learn some kanji! Thanks Guido and Pete for correcting me . 2. Some very nice examples of the same theme here, just keep on posting! Yeah, my taste is quite puristic mostely simple iron sukashi tsuba with little or no decorations. Both hitsuana are plugged with silver. The job was not done yesterday but defenitely after the issue of the papers. The second tsuba is nearly identical to mine, but a bit thicker and without an paper. Don´t know where Eric was at that time, but my tsuba was sent by USPS from NY. regards,

Hello Guido, like i said i only could recognise the cross-shaped kanji, which i thought stands for the mon. At least it still looks like the satsuma-mon . Thank you very much for the correction! best regards,

Hi Bruno, yeah i know. I was even inquiring for that one ! Thanks for the compliment . regards,

:steamed: FINALLY!!! :steamed: Sorry and hello everyone, today i recieved a new tsuba, a kind of tsuba i was on the hunt right from the beginning when i started collecting nihonto and tsuba. Like a lot of people, i am quite fond of the satsuma clan (their history, the way how they´re koshirae looked...) and now i was able to buy a kyo-shoami tsuba from the 18th century with they´re mon as the theme. The steel is of great quality and the patina in nearly mint condition. The color of the steel is a bt darker than in the pictures. It came in a high class kiri-box and with an hozon certificate from the early 90´s. The paper states that teh theme is the satsuma mon... at least i could recognize the cross-shaped kanji for it ! But i also so tsuba with nearly an identical theme that were described as kutsuwa(horse bit). Is it a moot decision of the NBTHK or a specific way to seperate both theme´s from each other? Of course you are free to leave a comment. dimensions: 80.55 mm x 79.61 mm x 5.51 mm thick school: kyo-shoami, 18th century regards,

Hi, it is called 'shinobi ana' and is generally seen in longer heavier blades. I have seen many shin-shinto blades with that feature. My example(daito ca. 1800):

Hi Chris, tekkotsu literally means iron bones. http://www.ksky.ne.jp/~sumie99/tekkotsu.html regards,

Hi Jesse, i was quicker this time, normally it is the other way around . Yeah, the blade is packed with activity and on the long side for a naginata. The one from Tadahiro... way out of my Price range . Wish you luck with that one and maybe you can get an discount (i got one), you just have to ask nicely. best regards,

Hi guys, thanks for all the comments so far. It is always the same thing, when i get a new piece. I find something anyone else would not even bother to mention and turn into "Hulk-mode". I really really like the blade (and my girlfriend )! The polish is great, the fit in the shirasaya is perfect and it is papered. The balance of the blade is absolutely awesome... and it cuts well (JUST KIDDING !) best regards,
-
Hi Peter, no actually he didn´t. You can find the original text in the first post. Yeah, i could ask Mike, but also I calmed down a little bit. The Naginata is in 99% perfect polish and i got an discount on the original price so i think that i can live with it. My girlfriend has a better collectors mentality than i have. She said: "The damn thing is 300 years old! What do you expect?" :D. Best Regards,

Hello, i found some nailcather in the blade. These where not visible in the pictures. They bother me a bit because quite picky in these things. The rest of the polish is in perfect condition. Anything i can do besides cleaning them? regards,

Hello my fellow forumites, to celebrate christmas i bought myself my first naginata. Here is what the dealer had to say about the blade (i think that i don´t need to mention who the seller was :D): Naginata in Shirasaya (NBTHK Hozon Paper) Signature : Kashu Jyu Fujiwara Mitsuhira Shinto: Ryosaku: Kaga (We divide 4 sections for each sword as Saijyo saku, Jyojyo saku Jyo saku and regular saki)This sword Kashu Jyu Fujiwara Mitsuhira belongs to Jyojyosaku ranking. The blade was polished. Habaki :copper single habaki. Blade length : 54.5cm or 21.46inches. Sori : 3.03cm or 1.19inches. Mekugi : 1 Width at the hamachi :3.1cm or 1.22inches. Kasane :0.83cm or 0.33inches. Era : Edo Period Circa Kyoho 1716-1735 Shape: Itame hada well grained with masa hada appearing The hada pattern could be observed well. Hamon: Nie deki suguha with mixture of notare work. It is could ha with sunagashi activities. Boshi is round turn back. Special feature :Kashu Jyu Fujiwara Mitsuhira is one of Katsuie group swordsmiths and also the son of Sandai Mitsukuni. He was called Chuumemon. This naginata is wide and thick with superb jigane. It is masterpiece of Fujiwara MItsuhira. We recommend this long and thick katana. Historical Background: Koishikawa Hospital was established by the order of Tokugawa Yoshimune on Keiho 7th year(1722). The population of Edo boosted due to massive influx of migrants from farming villages causing an outcast class in the society. This lead to Yoshimune’s order of building Koishikawa Hospital. This enabled the poors to take medical advice for free. I even learned something about the history of Kaga, the Maeda clan and the ikko ikki while i did my research about the smith. Here are some honorable mentions: http://www.badassoftheweek.com/index.cgi?id=75213299666 Feel free to leave some comments regards,

The stain is not a problem. If it is just choji oil it will vanish in a few weeks.

Only found one similar to your tsuba. Good luck! http://www.scholarsresource.com/browse/work/2144654696

Hi Ken, i don´t have the naginata in hand yet, but i will definitely check the fit in the shirasaya and make sure thet the blade is protected. It is not that humid where i live, although i keep my blades lightly oiled so that they do not rust.

Hi Jean, thanks for your answer. Unfortunately, i don´t own a tansu. There is no koshirae to the nagainata (that i know of :D), so no need for that extra stand. I do not have the space for that anyway. I have an empty katana kake left, i think that will do it for the fist time. I just put it in the shirasaya, blade up like with my other blades. regards,

Hello, i am in the process to buy my first naginata and wanted to ask, if there is a special tradition to display it? Yeah, i know it all comes down to personal taste at the end but... you know it does not hurt to ask. The naginata is quite long, so i must find a way to "press" it in the space that is left in my nihonto room. Thanks in advance! regards,

As a gift? Damn, i need better friends ! All i got from my best friend on my birthday was a warm handshake and the words: "We both know that i am poor, aren´t we?" best regards,

Hi Guys, it was an ebay auction. The Price was okay (i think), for a mumei blade. Papers were not mentioned by the seller. regards,

Not Even Good Enough For A Shirasaya?
Teimei replied to Teimei's topic in Auctions and Online Sales or Sellers
Hi, yeah Axel that is the same thought that crossed my mind! Paul, i did not want to insult the naginata, nor the seller that listed it. I was just wondering, why this quite nice blade sit´s there naked . In fact it could be my next purchase. Regards, -
Hi fellow members, when i was visiting aoi-art some time ago, i recognized this naginata: http://www.aoijapan.com/naginata-mumei-attributed-as-higo-kami-kuniyasu I thought, that it Looks like quite a good Piece, surely not high end but an honest Piece of work. But it seems that Tsurata-san thinks that this Piece is not even good enough for a shirasaya. Is it really that bad? Could be common, but i have never seen a bare blade on aoi before. regards,
