  1. And how much would said sword bag cost? My brothers wedding present could use such a nice presentation piece. Kurt k
  2. im no expert but I know what i like... That sir, is an interesting piece and rather well executed by the look of it... Nice Whats the material? Kurt K
  3. That was a bit of a joke Piers, going back to the original post at the top.. I do already have several very nice blades in my collection . Nothing mind blowing, but nice and within my present means . This all started with my wondering how current Shinken prices stacked up to original historic prices. Kurt K
  4. That is a fascinating article... so by my calculations ill need about 6.85 oz of gold to buy myself a high quality blade.. about 15oz for something really outrageous. A the current rate of exchange i think ill be better off converting my gold assets into silver as the historic 16:1 ratio is way off at the moment. Thanks for the replies my friends.. I have learned something new. Sweet. Kurt K
  5. I dont know if it has been discussed here before, but does anyone have a rough idea what the going rate for a sword was for the average samurai in feudal Japan? price in US dollars or original currency? I just to know how much gold i need to bring back with me when i finally get this time travel issue worked out...lol. Kurt K
  6. Can someone please explain to me why this is a yari and not a tanto? Im not familiar with this style of blade. Kurt k
  7. topic bump.. any more feedback?
  8. Grey, i was thinking the same, but the lack of any pins on the other one..........? As for the others, anyone care to take a guess at school? age?
  9. Yea.. if your talking about that bird i was digging through the box with determination.. sadly to no avail.
  10. I was at a local antique show and a seller had a box full of loose odds and ends. Among the assorted items were a few menuki that looked pretty good. This amost never happens around these parts so i took a gamble. What do you folks think? Kurt K
  11. Fusataro san? He does a lot of work with iron den forge up in canada. Kurt k
  12. Geriant... sorry.. i miss used a term.. i didnt think they were a matched set to begin with (ie same maker).. just similar. I should be more careful with my terminology. apologies for the misstatement. What schools do you think they are from? age? as for that one spot, who knows.. someone popped out a little gold for pocket money at some point i suspect. kurt
  13. I just picked up this lovely set of plum blossom tsuba and would appreciate any feedback you folks may have. They are both iron with gold, and silver inlay. The larger one is signed Mori-mitsu saku...... edo ju? not sure if im reading that correctly. What do you think? School? age? I would like to know more about them. Thanks in advance, Kurt k. (2nd try.. 1st post vanished)
  14. Looking closer, the Mei is not poorly cut, it appears to have been wire brushed. look how the yasuri Mei is deep towards the edge and almost invisible near the shinogi line. It looks like it was smoothed over by someone trying to remove rust. Kurt K And Now seeing what Stephen just wrote.

    Same Hand ?

Looks close to my eyes, though i do see some differences in curvature and shape in the carving. If i had to venture a guess, the signature on the right was done by someone who had an off center grasp. Perhaps a student? Just a shot in the dark. Kurt K
  16. Here is an unusual point of preservation protocol. How would one protect the sticker? What could be done (other than just being careful) to keep it from disintegrating? Kurt K
  17. My Best ebay pickup by far. Got it from a mom and pop antique shop who happened to sell on line. Late edo/turn of the last century (i think) Shakudo/darkcopper (not sure) Nicely carved with gold inlay. Cormorant fishing depicted on the obverse The poem in gold on the reverse sold me immediately. Not sure if it was a deal or not (because I dont know what its worth), but I sure like it and it happens to be one of the nicer Tsuba I have. Kurt K
  18. Agreed jean. The file work looks completely wrong. The habaki is most certainly not made for this blade. If anything, its a VERY late war sword with genuine fittings assembled around it. Kurt k
  19. Hard to read upside down but it looks dremel cut. I smell chinese copy. Others please chime in. Kurt K
  20. If your looking for a polisher, bob benson in Hawaii is really good. David Hofhine does a decent job as well. There is also a link to a Japanese polisher in the for sale or trade section . Regards, Kurt K. If the pitting is not too deep it could well be saved. Dont try to do anything yourself.
  21. Ken, i could watch it (in texas). Check you fire wall filters.
  22. Randy, I too, would like to be added to your list.. This seems like a great learning opportunity! Kurt K
  23. Did I hear correctly that the sword laws in Japan are changing regarding Showato being issued Juho-token-rui-torokusho? Kurt k
  24. Makes me love my $100.00 Mantetsu more and more every time i see one of these auctions... although i dont want to sell it anyway. Kurt k
  25. I just stumbled across this older thread and it reminded me of something i saw a few years ago. What would a complete, original, clean condition. set like this go for? I knew an antique dealer who was selling one for $10k a few years ago.. It had a blade in it too with double bohi and O-kissaki (all i remember from 5 years ago) but I know that does not tell anyone much. The one on AOI was gendai. How could you tell if it was older? Kurt
