  1. This falls into the "oh Hheellllll no" category.. carving looks stamped and is poorly done at that, habaki is garbage.. blade is buffed to the point of having no defined surfaces. fittings are very poorly cast.. Everything about this screams "run". The Ak looks legit though... Kurt.k
  2. I have mikes #... pm me
  3. I first saw it in a "National Geographic" when i was a kid.. Prob not the first time it was ever published but it was certainly akin to the moment i figured out the reason i liked girls when first I caught a glimpse at a playboy centerfold. Remember the pregressive... "ooooohhHHH.. yea.. that...Ok...now it makes sense " realization? lol
  4. Mike has never done wrong by me.. He will be doing my next saya as well. Kurt k
  5. would love to meet up with DFW locals but i work on saturdays.. Crime only takes tuesdays off..
  6. Fort worth here..
  7. I don't know about it having been cut down.. Where is the other Mekugi ana then? ... Then if it were cut, what was the point? All the fittings would be in the same spot they were before as it all seems to line up the way most tsuka do. No pile of seppa as if the Machi was moved up. not a over sized habaki. Am i missing something?
  8. Im thinking there is much more going on with this blade.. That Nakago is huge.. Polish candidate in my opinion.
  9. I was looking over an old post and realized that I never uploaded the pics.. so mea culpa and here are those shots.. Id still be interested in what people thought about the steel strapping on the tsuka under the ito and the 2nd mekugi. Kurt. k
  10. It hammered for $1800... way to much for the condition in my opinion.
  11. I have seen the diamond/punch stamp before on other blades that were made by Bishu ju Mano Masayasu... Some have conjectured they were used as inventory/batch marks. I have a theory that they denote blades made by the master and not a student as i have observed that they only show up on blades that are Soshin Mei .
  12. some more pics of the blade.. what do you guys think is the max i should bid?
  13. thanks for the input.. I will have to seek out some books on the subject. if anyone has a recommendation id be happy to hear it.
  14. They actually look a little better in hand.. could not get my old camera to focus cleanly.. they are actually darker and a bit sharper in detail. So kyo-kinko.. may i ask what reasoning you put into that? What about them can be used as a determining factor.. Want to learn .
  15. No Bruce i dont own it.. was thinking of owning it.. but a cut down modern made sword seems like a poor investment unless i could get it on the super cheep.. its part of an auction lot with another tanto.. now if it was a Wak id be all over it. .. ill put in a low bid and see what happens.. tanto looks ok..
  16. yes..still in war mounts.. wood saya.. leather sheath... i was thinking cut down for a tank or aircraft.
  17. 34.5 inches overall length... 23.75 inch nagasa...So i think i'm 99.99% correct in thinking that this is a cut down Mantetsu (which honestly i dont think i have ever seen before)... The placement of the mei in relation to the mekugi ana, in conjunction with the yasuri mei variations, seems to indicate it was a katana cut to wakizashi size ... but... i'm .01% curious.. is there an off chance this is a factory wak?
  18. Would the Mei be a give away as well? seem unevenly "worn" with no evidence of an uneven surface..
  19. I picked up this set a while back at an antique show out of a jewelry box. I know exactly zero about menuki. Any thoughts are appreciated. ideas on school/maker/value? (. just curious how i did ..paid $80.00) Thanks Kurt K
  20. While cool the quality of the steel is a complete unknown... Id pass.
  21. It's pretty amazing to see Mantetsu swords selling for this much... I have to wonder how many are still around seeing that so many were destroyed. Are they rarer than we think? Kurt K
  22. Thanks guys... The " hara" and "nao" were stumping me.. Now that i see it im having a "duah" moment.. ... So showato... hum.. not seeing a stamp on the nakago.. did he ever make gendaito? Two holes in nakago and older mounts on the tsuka. Pre war?
  23. Hello everyone.. I have been tripping over these two nakago for a few days now.. I know that one is Ishi ? kane ? something.. but im struggling to make out the rest. I did not see a stamp btw.. im thinking its early showa/gendai period. The wakizashi seems interesting.. has huge menuki under the ito which im thinking are prob worth the price of the sword. Any help is greatly appreciated.. I have the opportunity to get these both on the cheap. Kurt Knabbe
  24. Im still working on the details.. as it stands.. its likely going to be small scale. As more develops, i will keep you all posted
