Was this blade originally coming out of the wood work from a canadian seller on eBay many years ago?

In my cheap opinion the Yasuyoshi mei looks odd but I am not a Shinsa team so take my oppinion for what it costs and everybody do their own research. Some of the Information given in the auction description is just wrong as also Jussi did state, too. Sadanao is not Nambokucho but Muromachi according to Tanobe Sayagaki

210 The Sayagaki gives the sword to Muromachi. It gives it to a Yamato smith. Many of the descriptions are misleading or plain wrong. The supposed Yasukuni blade looks like a most recent Gimei from Samurai Monkeys dremel work bench. To me the Tadayoshi is the most appealing one but at the estimate plus Premium it is above retail for a perfectly polished one in Japan

Congratulations ont his fine purchase! I must admit two things: First I was the person who quickly inquired when ypu made this post because it is a very appealing blade to me ... and I must confess I totally missed it when I had seen it before! Here is what Bonhams did say about it: "A Handachi Unsigned, Shinto The blade with one mekugi-ana, midare hamon, leather bound tsuka with copper fuchi and kabuto-gane, copper paddle-shaped menuki, and hammered iron tsuba, in its shuroge-nuri lacquered saya with copper mounts en suite with the tsuka 84.8 cm. blade " When I read Shinto unsigned I just skipped it. Infact it is definately a signed Koto piece. One has to wonder what auction house will often come up with. In this case for the sake of the happy buyer. Congratulations!

I had been offered this sword, too at 2k but then the seller disapperared. So I guess it is not necessarily a scam as he would have done his best to "sell" the sword to as many people as possible. So I keep my fingers crossed that your friend will receive the sword soon. My personal take on the sword is after a long study that it may be legit work by that smith but having had the mon added later on. The workmanship in the blade seems to be good and correct for the smith while teh signature is pretty different, especially the positioning of it. Would be nice if this went to someone knowledgeable who can come uop with a good oppinion on it.

How old is Bob by now?

To be more serious, there is no ultimate answer as we don't know how much you feel comfortably spending nor what exactly you are looking for. However you can buy a decent Wakizashi from one of the recommended dealers like for example Ray Singer here at USD 2500 plus or a Katana at USD 4000 and up. You can also spend less but then the condition will likely not be perfect.

Compared to the Oshigata in Sloughs this is not a good match. My assumption is that this started its life way before the 1940s anfd is probably an altered Shinshinto blade ....

My gut feeling says it looks unreliable

You may likely not like my reply but it is the most frank maybe even blunt and best advice you can get: As long as you can not tell an obvious real Nihonto from a fake you should NOT buy any sword at all but look into this affair a lot more FIRST (by reading some basic books or reading this forum) You say that the seller asks a lot of money. This is very relative. But what is ultimate is that it is obviously a lot of money for you - the more you should be carefull at what you buy as you will likely NOT see that money come back to you case you are going to sell it again one day. I could now give you a couple more reasons why you would likely NOT want to buy this sword but once you study you will likely find out yourself. Enjoy this great hobby and spend some little money and a lot of time on some books first.

That is offtopic and not part of this discussion. Before aynthing is sent for polishing it first needs to be determined if it is worth teh effort. Gimei or Mumei Muromachi hardly is

Thank you Ray. Unfortunately the Nakago is in poor condition. The blade has seen some polishes, too but should probably polish up well. It was mainly the mounts and the shape that attracted me.
