Thank you as well BaZZa, I’ll give that a shot!

Thank you Peter, I appreciate your guidance and insight. As a beginner this study is somewhat daunting; much to learn. I apologize if I came off as unappreciative. The signature does appear unusual even to my untrained eye so I welcome any and all direction. I’ll get some proper photos and see what I can learn. Very much appreciate your time and comments!

Well, sure, if my searching thus far had turned up any photos at all of similar two-character mei under Sukekane, however all I can seem to find reference to are works by Yokoyama Sukekane which are signed quite differently….hence my simple question here as a beginner in this hobby to make sure I’m even on the right path. Thanks. Kris H

Hello all, still a novice and hoping for some assistance translating this Wakizashi mei. Purchased this recently from a friend, as I was particularly attracted to the really nice crushed eggshell saya. Friend didn’t know much about the blade, he thought it was koto period and his notes said “signed Yamato”. Did my best trying to match it to the swordsmith index and I have no idea where Yamato came from, but it appears to my uneducated eye to be Sukekane. 助包 Hoping someone can confirm or deny. Thank you in advance and my apologies for the imperfect photo, only have seller photos as of now. Thank you! Kris H

Hello all, still very much a novice collector here and I very much appreciate the expertise on this board. Recently acquired this little tanto in shirasaya and was wondering what information the more experienced here could provide as far as age, style, etc. Seller didn’t have much information to go on so I don’t know much about it. Blade is mumei, nagasa is just over 19cm. My collecting budget is tight and this piece didn’t cost me very much so I’m not expecting a national treasure, just curious to know what others think. Thank you! Kris H.

Hello all, A good friend inherited this Gunto and we’re hoping to decipher the smith. I tried my hand at translating but I’m clearly not very good as I’m now here asking for help. Thank you all in advance and unfortunately these are the only photos I have at this moment. A translation of the habaki would also be greatly appreciated! Thank you for your time! Kris

Thank you all so much for the replies thus far, your expertise is greatly appreciated! I will certainly look into a polish, I had initially considered that when I received the blade but since I am a true beginner with nihonto I had no idea if it would be worth it or not with this particular example.

Hello all, complete novice here but looking to learn. I acquired this tanto from a coworker, he had inherited it from his grandfather but had no interest in it. A member on another board was kind enough to translate the signature for me as “Bishu Ju Yasumitsu”. While researching I came across this thread: http://www.militaria.co.za/nmb/topic/4042-help-with-mei-bishu-ju-yasumitsu/with a katana signed in a similar manner, and it seems opinion was that the signature was gimei, as Yasumitsu would have included “Osafune” in the mei. Hoping someone could shed some light on exactly what I have here and if my tanto could be gimei as well. Would love to know what era/period it dates to if anyone is able to provide that info from my not-so-great photos. Nagasa is 28.5cm. I have no interest in it’s value or selling, just looking for info and I am extremely fascinated by the idea of owning a blade that could be quite old, gimei or not. Many thanks in advance for any assistance! Regards, Kris H.
