  1. Take it from a sword swonger that those wouldn't cut well, at all.
  2. Some nice items, but few bargains.
  3. Not in Hawaii. It would have to be Bob Benson, or Woody Hall. Woody used to work for Bob, but broke off to start his own company, some years ago. He now lives in Las Vegas.
  4. Research? No. Kantei? Sure, but this blade barely makes it as a collectible. To qualify for shinsa, the kissaki damage would have to be repaired, with a polish, & a new shirasaya - that really takes it out of the realm of cost-effectiveness. Enjoy it for what it is.
  5. I'll keep an eye out, John. A remarkably large number of stolen blades pass through Hawaii, & my sword mentor has helped with their recovery.
  6. Some good advice here, Chris. Glad you're buying books before blade shopping, but we all understand the "pressure" to buy a first blade. Be patient.
  7. Grev, I'm tempted to say that it must be that extra centimeter, but it's more likely that the sellers just valued their blades differently. You can generally tell an auction company where to set the starting bid, thereby setting the minimum you're willing to accept. You'll note that the less-expensive blade sold, while the other one didn't get any bids.
  8. Trust me that there are a lot more out there. Keep an eye out in the NMB For Sale & Dealer threads, Adam. Have you narrowed down what you're interested in collecting. If you're most interested in Bizen or Soshu, then that provides a lens for you to examine offerings.
  9. It's more than what I would pay, Russ, but it is a real Nihonto. Check out https://markussesko.com/2015/04/13/kantei-1-sugata-7/ so you can make your own educated decision.
  10. This is a field of study that doesn't come quickly, Mark. Even when you have blades in hand, it's often not possible to understand what you're seeing, speaking from my own experience. You just have to keep on studying, & connecting the dots. Our own Markus Sesko has put some great study material on-line at https://markussesko.com/kantei/ & Darcy's https://yuhindo.com/ may be the best site to study shoshin blades.
  11. This may add some more info: https://www.militaria.co.za/nmb/topic/18860-kogatana-shirasaya-and-habaki/
  12. Soon, do you mean the kogatana blade, or the kozuka handle that holds it?
  13. Any photos, before you send your blade off, Jeff?
  14. We're sure an odd bunch.
  15. Josh, buy a couple of books, so you understand what these items are. That way, you'll get more for your money, too.
  16. Woody has always done gret work for me, too.
  17. Excellent info - thanks!
  18. That must weigh a ton! What is the weight, Simon?
  19. Well, Curran, I got so upset about a scammer that I went to https://pages.ebay.com/securitycenter/report_concern.html & reported the guy there. Don't know if I was the cause, but I never saw another post by the idiot.
  20. Geoff, I'd never thought about it, but I've been married twice, & both brides were 22. First one lasted a decade, & I just had our 43rd anniversary with number 2!
  21. Yes, definitely report him, Curran.
  22. Oh, my, Stephen. I hope I don't feel like that in another year!
  23. They will only seem cheaper until you gather enough info to want the "good stuff." Welcome aboard, Tim. quite a few us have done historical martial arts training, so you're in good company. Hit those books, & start asking questions. You're in good company.
  24. Not unusual with Bonhams. They're good people to work with.
