    I hope im wrong, but the tsuba in question looks like it was made yesterday. It looks new, wheres the ware? and patina? (natural patina). The reverse of the seppa die especially, stands out to me as a modern attempt at an aged patina.

    Hi Ken, you bring up something i have thought about recently, sword size/cutting tests. Surely stouter heavier swords with wider sakihaba would have made better cutting swords. Mass x velocity= momentum. I think its fair to say that the rankings where not accurate. I suppose the attraction with these swords is the added historic value.

    I see, cheers Guido That makes me ask, if a sword with a cutting test inscription goes to get papered, is the inscription also evaluated?, aplogies ken for going off on tangent!

    How do we know if a cutting test inscription is authentic?, not all come with silver or gold inlay. If it adds value then surely there must be fakes?

    To go from $9000 buy now to an auction without an hefty reserve does seem a little strange.

    Reminds me of a wak on here some time ago, that too had a black tarnish on the habaki/peg. Possibly the same blade.

    If I remember correctly, if a seller doesn't sell too often, has a low seller score or is new to Ebay, doesn't Ebay hold the money for 30 days? (think its 30 days, may be less). If you have sent him the money via paypal, will he not have access to the funds immediately?

    30x with an LED, 60x maybe?, might look into buying a new one. John, "art magnifier", as you say, maybe similar to a close range monocular, posh term maybe .

    Cheers for the clarification Chris, i was under the impression that nioi could not be distinguished individually, even with a magnifying glass, like a mist. I just presumed they where ko-nie as they where clearly individual crystals. A loupe, i see they make some that attach to your glasses, as Denis mentions. That would help with the focusing, difficult to keep the hand steady with the small glass that i own. I was sat against a glass patio door with the sun behind me, so the lighting was good.

    I was wondering how common it is for folk to use magnification when studying nihonto. I was looking over a few blades today with an high magnification glass that i use at work, it was very interesting to see the minute martensite crystals that you would never see with the naked eye. One sword in particular, a sword i thought was nioi-deki was packed with ko-nie and ji-nie, details that had gone unnoticed.
