  2. I was wondering when did they start doing oil tempering as I have a blade that appears to have been done that way also.
  3. Hi everyone, I am trying to find out as much info on this katana I reciently purchased as possible, time period providence school, just for my own knowledge. I am a beginner at this so if I am wrong about something please let me know as that's how we learn. Any info or thearys would be greatly appreciated. The nagasa is 68.2cm the whole length 86.3cm the sori 2.4cm. Sword in hand the hada is a fine ko-itame-hada. You also notice that there is what's left of a mekugi-ana at the end of the tang also what appears to be part of a kanji. There is also file marks on the upper half of the nagasa they border on the edge of being kiri-suji-chigai and taka-no-ha. Also looking at the nagasa you can tell that the munemachi was cut in later. All of this corosponds to my thoughts that it has been cut down about 12cm. I will be borrowing a better camara and getting some more pics shortly. Thank you in advance for any help. I got that other camara it's no better than the last sorry. I resized the photo's.

    seal of sada

Hello everyone, At a small show I recently saw a katana with a seal on the tang with the character for sada in it. I have also seen it in a book called The Japanese Sword The Soul Of The Samurai page 116. If somebody could explain to me what this seal stands for I would appreciate it. Thank you.

    Why do we collect.

I collect( well I just bought my first nihonto but I have studied them for some time now)for the same reason as you Jon. I'm just fascinated by the craftsmanship and history. I recall reading that at the age of 7 the boys father would generaly give him a wakizashi without a tsuba.
  6. I'll get in touch with him thank you.
  7. Hello everyone. This is the first time I am posting on this site. I just bought my first nihonto(I have wanted one since I was 5). I did what I said I would not do I got it on ebay. Any help that anyone can offer in placing what time period or school this katana came from or any other information about it would be very appreciated. Also some advice on who to go to for shirasaya and habaki would help out. Here is the link to it. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... %26fvi%3D1
