Thanks Fellows, I bought these about 10 years ago because we collect orientalia and I liked the way they fit together. They cost about $7.00 each in an import shop of trinkets. I still see them on eBay occasionally. I pinned them nose to tail, painted the gold highlights and made a brass tab to hold them on. I'm glad they turned out so well. Now I need to arrange my man cave into different categories, not so mixed up historically. Howard Dennis

Just made this for my first Kabuto and thought I'd ask the experts opinion. Would this be something a samurai might want for his kabuto? Howard Dennis

Thanks for the help fellows, that's just what I was looking for. Now, can anyone tell me more about my question of the significance of why my newest kabuto has 56 plates and I can find zero reference online to a kabuto with 56 plates? Howard Dennis

My newest Kabuto was advertised as a 56 Plate helmet and I just assumed that was a mistake in counting but now that I have it in hand it really is made of 56 plates. Does that signify anything such as school or age. I have been unable to find any online information at all on that number of plates used in a kabuto. Howard Dennis

Just acquired this menpo online and would like to know the Japanese name for it and approximate age if possible. Thanks, Howard Dennis

Thanks again Ian, I sure appreciate your help. My last 3 purchases have all suffered the indignity of an amateur restoration with a modern coat of urushi, and all this done in their mother country no less! Ian, would you know of any way to remove this and get back to what ever was their original finish. Howard Dennis

Ian, I stumbled across this helmet listed as a 13th century Mongolian helmet. Think there could be any connection to my odd helmet? It sure looks similar. Howard Dennis

Thank you Ian, the fellow in Japan I bought these from said the odd helmet would have originally had chain mail. Perhaps it is patterned after some European helmet? Howard Dennis

I posted the only other pictures I have as I'm awaiting delivery. I know they are not reproduction or modern as the inside shows. Sadly some fool thought he was a great restorer and slathered a new coat of lacquer on them. Anyone know of any substance that will remove urushi other than chisels or sandblasting? Howard Dennis

Just bought 2 more kabuto's and would love to know what the Japanese name is for these odd styles. Thanks, Howard Dennis

No need to feel sorry Ian. Thanks for the education. Just goes to show you should always go with your first impression. Based on sword signatures I'd seen I felt this looked "unnatural" but since it was an online purchase the bad photo was all I had to go by. Luckily it was a very inexpensive purchase. Best Regards, Howard Dennis

Thanks so much for the help, Geraint, I really appreciate it. Funny you should show the example you did as I'm told mine is signed the same exact way. Do you know of any way I could get to view the signature of your example to compare it to mine? Howard Dennis

Thanks I did everything just as I always do and it just won't work here so I may just send to Brian. Funny you should mention the price. I've always thought these guys sell a little low just so the seller won't be too upset and sell in the future. In my case what was quoted on screen rose over $400.00 when I went to buy it, still happy though. Howard Dennis
