  1. The only way to get a more authoritative opinion is to submit to shinsa; this hamon style is referenced by Nagayama as representative of Shinto Ishido. The yasurime do not say Mino to me, but my opinion is not authoritative.
  2. A tripod will help in getting proper focus, if you have not been using one already.
  3. Ishido looks good for this sword to me...better pics will help. Nice blade regardless....
  4. How about a full length photo to see the sugata, and some dimensions?
  5. It certainly is an idiosyncratic signature, which lends itself to judging shoshin mei, looking at the available examples.
  6. I saw a few more online; i am convinced...thanks Tom!
  7. I saw one mei online that was similar from Genroku period; any others to compare?
  8. I bought this yari from a member (it took a while to get here due to mail issues, we forgot who it is supposed to be, can't find the thread here on NMB) and i have not had good luck trying to translate....it seems to be something something Daijo Shimosaka something something...any help please?

    Ainu blades

Considering that the Japanese themselves had buried large weapons caches, i would think it probable that Ainu people living in remote areas might hide swords for later retrieval.

    Ainu blades

Very nice, Peter...during the period of warfare against the Ainu, it seems they would gather the spoils when they won; it would be very interesting to see what the Ainu smiths made themselves.

    Koto Katana

Tanobe sensei must have really liked that sword!
  12. Story seems fake, price is definitely excessive!
  13. Guess we will be seeing this a lot more for a while, until the weather warms up....heat and humidity reduce the spread apparently.

    Shigetaka Yari

Very nice; I also have one on the way, but unfortunately the USPS decided to send it via ocean mail, waiting since November from Germany
  15. By shape alone I would say shinshinto...but i have not studied Kunitsugu mei. it reminds me of kinnoto, the emperor loyalist swords from the 1800s.
  16. I disagree that it is too far gone...maybe in its' current state it is hard to appreciate....but I like it. It looks to be perhaps an early Shinto Mino sword, sort of Izumi no Kami Kunisada like, gunome hamon, nice sugata....a samurai's blade. Other than the ware on the shinogi, I see no reason it would not polish up well (costs aside.)
  17. As far as I know, the mune and the top and bottom of the habaki suspend the sword inside the shirasaya. The ones i have restored were that way, and I make mine the same.
  18. Which works, Axel....the tattoos, or La Pita pottery vs. Jomon?
  19. I have a theory that the Jomon culture, and the La Pita people ancestral to some Polynesian cultures, were linked by genealogy and culture....i think the Jomon went north and east, while the La Pita went south and east, both making it to the American continent. Anthropologists claim the La Pita were ancestral to the Samoan people, but quit making pottery when they got to Samoa due to the lack of clay. They must not have gotten off the tarmac at the airport...the place is full of clay.
  20. I have a feeling the o kissaki was originally chu kissaki, and it was tarted up. i like the tsuba.
  21. Hey John, with all of six posts, you want to criticize the board owner...amateur polish is severely criticized here for good reason, as many blades have been ruined. Y our job has left the jitetsu in a garish state, and the hamon dark when it should be bright. The effect is to make it look non traditional or even like a Chinese fake. There is a good reason why apprenticeships take so long. Posting your self polish job here is not in keeping with the board goal of preservation of traditional blades.
  22. Sell the table, keep the blades'
  23. Well, I like mine ...and Kawachi Kunihiro his because his Hamon rock, ....
  24. It looks like Kofun stuff from the old tumulus tombs, but. I don't doubt the CHINESE CAN fake it. Sorry for typos, my Mac died and this tablet six.
