  1. I agree with JP.
  2. The last portion of the mune above the kissaki has an unusual ramped appearance....don't know if it means anything.
  3. Monkey with a sword! Look out!
  4. A better photo of the mei side of the nakago without the habaki will help to see if there are any stamps.
  5. Lots of Mino Kanemotos, don't give up yet, as Robert said.

    Yari Question

There are multiple options; i usually recommend Robert Benson in Hawaii....I sent you a PM.
  7. As a former surfboard hand shaper, i remember when shaping machines using CNC started taking over the main market; i hope that this is not the beginning of the same thing for swords....the art and craft of both fields is exacting and physically demanding, and it would be a shame for machines to take over and lose the soul.
  8. The SBG is actually promoting machine buffing of swords

    Yari Question

I think it is as you say, Piers.....it depends. The per inch guide is generally for swords anecdotally; to me, the extra side a yari has is offset by being short. More complex shapes probably cost more. A really cheap polish could be a disaster, as the stones necessary for a good polish are expensive.

    Yari Question

The going rate as far as I know is $100 per inch x 10.5 inches, but cheaper polishes can be had.
  11. Photos would help a lot to see what we are talking about, welcome from a former (native) Oregonian.
  12. PS don't do anything to it yourself except putting a light coat of oil and gently wiping it off with soft tissue or soft cloth. Welcome to the NMB.
  13. On mine they are missing entirely; i was considering using some brazing rod and peening it over as a pin, otherwise the koiguchi is only held by friction.
  14. Is it peened pins or screws that hold on the koiguchi to the metal saya, and what is the best way to remove the wooden liner for cleaning? Thanks,

    Yari Question

    I do...
  16. I like it too....
  17. There was a thread a while back on auxiliary swords; this could well be one of the late war output.
  18. I wondered why Ken said that, until i saw that the hamon runs into the nakago.

    Yari Question

From a phsics standpoint, it would seem that the larger the blade of a yari, the larger (longer) the nakago would be, as the forces exerted in use could result in side loading and other forces that could result in failure if not sufficiently strong. A yari I recently acquired had a bent nakago which seems to have occurred in use, as the force required to bend it was significant. Maybe some styles had shorter tangs by design?
  20. Welcome to all of our new members!
  21. I have been using poplar for shirasaya myself; it seems to do the job.
  22. Referencing the shifted character, is this the same one used for "Taira"?
  23. What wood are you using? Nice work...
  24. Worthy...yes. Worth it financially....that is the $3000 question.
