  1. Awesome, Malcolm; i looked at the recipe and find i have both of the ingredients at hand. Thank you very much!
  2. Thank you both very much!
  3. Looking for info on how menuki are attached on tsuka that do not use ito; I have a project underway using tiger menuki with short stubs on the back. This does not make me confident that friction is in any way sufficient to secure them without some kind of glue. Suggestions please?
  4. I would call that good.
  5. Location, location, location.....
  6. If you reheat a sword with existing sori without straightening, it will retain its curvature, but the martensite will be converted to austenite or some other softer structure. If you then heat it to the critical temperature and water quench, the steel will be converted back to martensite or other harder structure along the edge, which will induce curvature. interestingly, quenching in oil causes reverse curvature.

    The Ebay Game

None of the blades i have bought have come from Ebay, but i do occasionally look at nihonto listed there. I have seen some katana and many wakizashi that look worth going for if I had been in the market at that time. However, with so many swords available from reputable persons here on the NMB, it seems better to consider first what is offered here.
  8. Once the steel has been heated to forging temperature, it has no memory of what it was before. IMO, the only reason for excessive curvature on a rehardened sword would be that the smith did not straighten the existing curvature prior to yakeire or temperature was excessively high. Mizukage is a function of how the sword was quenched. If competently done, no trace of the saiha would remain.
  9. Tsukamaki......wrong. Fittings.......wrong. "Kanji" on blade.....wrong. Profile of "sharpening"......wrong. As stated, this is not a Japanese katana and is an extremely poor imitation; even the Chinese fakes are better than this.
  10. That is incredible workmanship! What a standard to aspire to.
  11. I have seen that emblem on a tanto once at Benson's house. You might shoot him an email.

    Mekugi Ana Mystery

Bill G., with respect, you said it was a bit of a teaser....do you mean a mystery, or do you know the answer to your question? I do not have much to add to what has been said above, as all comments made have some merit; i would suggest that if you can have an x-ray done it may exclude some possibilities. The apparent shape in the photo of the mizukage would lend some support to the idea of a welded nakago in my opinion, which is not expert
  14. Sad times for both sides.

    Sword Information

As near as i can tell from your photos, the mekugi (peg) is in the second hole back from the tsuba, and it is likely that the peg should be pushed out from the omote to the ura side. When holding the sword in use, the ura side is on the right. It may be possible to hold the sword vertically with one hand, and gently tap the underside of your fist with your other hand, to reposition the same and ito to gain access to the mekugi. A small drift punch or wooden chopstick and gentle taps may free the peg.
  17. Price seems fair to me, even with the flaws, though better condition swords can sometimes be found in that range. Polish seems fairly recent and not top shelf.
  18. I agree with Grey.
  19. Does anyone have this information available online?
  20. I am making a new tsuka for a shortened tachi, and i was curious if my mekugiana was within the specs that Grey posted; it is not, only two of my fat fingers width from the machi. I made the hole in the tsuka to fit the mekugiana instead of the other way around. I wonder if there is data that shows how the placement of the mekugiana affects the security of the blade other than historical convention?
  21. Good job Stephen and congrats to the new owner...I think the tsuba has a nice appeal...not all tastes agree.

    Kantei For Fun

I am in awe of Tanobe Sensei's sayagaki as a work of art in itself.
  23. Yes, I see your point, and for the price asked, it would be nice if a hefty donation was made to the board upon sale.
