  1. I think a constant humidity and temperature are both good, but the temperature needn't be in the comfort zone, i.e. expensive heating bill.
  2. The body has markings that are reminiscent of the old Jomon corded pottery, very cool. I found a piece of Japanese cast iron from a broken tetsubin, while on my excursion to the old plantation where i got my coffee beans for growing; someday i will incorporate it into steel for a blade.
  3. 55% RH is what i have seen listed as what museums use for sword displays; lower wouldn't hurt the swords, but the koshirae might have issues. Higher RH and the swords may have accelerated rusting.
  4. Tsuka wrap and kashira are wrong, also the tsuba is not WW2 issue; I am sure more photos of the blade would confirm the sword is not Japanese. Hope it was not expensive; you can cut pool noodles with it maybe
  5. I do have to wonder about the file markings on the plug matching the yasurime of the nakago; and the seppa is bizarre to say the least. If the price paid was appropriate for what the work shows, no foul, but if it was described as shoshin, that is a different matter. Good discussion.
  6. The absence of yasurime (file marks) on the nakago are a it of a red flag as well....
  7. Worth a polish if the cost is not objectionable; I do not see any problems for a competent polisher in the photos.

    Suishinshi Masahide Mei

Interesting, as we have often discussed the issue of signature change here; most have said they thought not, while i thought it likely, due to age, arthritis, etc.
  9. Very interesting; i wonder what the "commandeered polisher" had to say about it?
  10. Real nihonto or real hamon; which do you mean (or both?)
  11. How about a photo of the inscription?
  12. Any idea on dimensions, Kathleen? I can check my wood stock and maybe we can come up with something.....
  13. Real hamon on a stainless blade would be a neat trick; i have not seen it done.
  14. I would have kept it for the price, but too late for that; I agree the listing is problematic. Surely the polishing of such a yari is a worthy task.

    Lost in school

    Me either.....
  16. I see activities which i would not expect to see in an oil quenched blade.
  17. Sometimes mine are named "P.I.T.A." (Pain In The.... for our non English native speakers)
  18. I showed the sword to Bob Benson on my recent Hawaii trip; he thought it was Kanbun Shinto, reminiscent of the Izumo no kami Kunisada school; I had considered that as well, but had thought it might be earlier.
  19. Possibly machi okuri but fine otherwise, in my opinion, for what it is worth.
  20. Ford, how were the brush like strokes achieved, was it by tagane, if that is the right word? Sublime.
  21. Gassan?
  22. More beer
  23. Looks like some nice old stuff.
