  1. Tamahagane is the best iron made out of a poor process to make it; that is why it is sorted, stacked, forge welded, cut, restacked, rewelded, etc, to achieve some homogenous steel. That was all they had in those days to work with; now it is just to maintain an art form.
  2. I am going from what the OP said regarding the capture, and posting the subsequent letter. Extraordinary claims require some proofs. The sword isn't telling me much.
  3. Curious as to why a Japanese captain would surrender his sword to a US corporal, then write him a letter providing sword kantei.
  4. I remember someone had done a paper on this, don't have it at hand....but given the cost of swords even then, tamahagane must have been a resource not cheaply or readily available.
  5. The mei are different in my view; if you like the sword, buy it, not the mei, but don't pay shoshin price, would be my advice.

    Questionable blade

Based on the rough ji surface and the color of the ha, i think the blade has been etched in an amateur attempt to restore; a new polish should fix it.
  7. Shinto mumei wakizashi, needs a polish to say more, unlikely to be worth the cost of restoration. It had a rough life indeed.
  8. I have seen a lot of Pavel Bolf's work online, not in person....his work seems pretty decent generally; I don't know regarding bohi.
  9. It looks as if the habaki has been forced over the machi; I recently bought a sword with the same issue, and with a piece of wood and a mallet, was able to tap it carefully back to remove it.

    Rai Kunimitsu Tanto

Should have stopped at the bo bi.
  11. I think so as well, definitely Mino in my opinion.
  12. I think it is older, maybe Momoyama cut down, just based on the proportions from the last pic. Some swords are bitey.....be careful!

    Questionable blade

It would be stranger if the line was straight, as if it had been masked off and artificially patinated that way. Even if the nakago is masked, there is usually some variance due to the polishing stones.
  15. How do you figure that?
  16. It has a nice shape, if you can afford it, you should have it polished to show its true qualities. I do not know how well the shinsa panels are able to judge out of polish blades, probably they don't spend a lot of time on what they can't see.
  17. That is a deal for someone with $$, great sword.

    New tsuba from Ebay

After some brief searches, it is obvious to me that it is not THE Nobuie; out of the 15 Haynes identifies, can it be said which one this might be?
  23. Very nice indeed!

Thank you Guido; any feeling for shoshin or not? I will do some internet searching, as I have no tosogu references.
