there's an article about a Tokugawa descendent recently in Japan Today ( something like that ), but since I have been " warned " about posting 1 % Japanese related news item, I didn't link that to the board. By the way, Mr. Cheney has this 1 % solution, I don't see why if it's good enough for Dick, it's not good enough for me. I'll try to see if I can locate that article, he ( the Tokugawa dude ) mentioned pro-bukufu, that's why i asked. milt -

" lifted " ( author is Ted ) from another sword message board.................. " Hi All, Just heard from my brother-in-law who was on-line for the London auction today, he claims it was a disaster for swords although the large bundles of fittings seem to sell. Most of the good swords b.i. 'd (b.i.'d means Bid Insufficient and the item is then withdrawn by the auctioneer ), Some examples: 253: Yamashiro katana (Ikkanshi Tadtsuna) est.: £35,000-50,000 high bid £12,000 254 A tachi in silver mounts that belonged to Eva Peron est £25,000-30,000 high bid £10,000 256 Kunimichi katana, est £26,000-30,000 high bid £8,000 258 Yausada with cutting test, est £50,000-80,000 high bid £7,000 261 Yosozaemon Sukesada (to die for!) est £50,000-80,000 high bid £11,000 264 Signed Bizen Tomonari, (Tokuju) est £280,000-300,000 high bid £60,000 £1 =$1.54 US " .................. I believe Ted is referring to Christie's of London. viewtopic.php?f=4&t=4134 Dear despots, please move thread to appropriate place. Danke. Milt

my shi shi menuki on sale on e-bay is way better than the ones you shown. The fuchi is not good, the menuki is ok if you need them for matching motif on re-mount project. http://www.esnips.com/web/menuki?docsPage=1#files not saying they are " juyo level " but I do believe most of them meet certain standard. You should start at least at that level. milt

not talking about oiling it like coating it thoroughly...just a small drop to clean off the red rust " dust " to check the underlying patina. I don't think it'll do harm. milt

Nara is a good call..... I think It would look better cleaned up a little with ivory chip + light choji oil to check patina and progress. milt

the thread topic does sound like an urgent call come to think of it, otherwise there's nothing really " bad " in all the messages . Sword looks ok and i can see shan's point . The koshirae does sort of sucks especially the oversized mis-match menuki. so.............. let's have a few and i begin to fall in love with you all AGAIN already..... milt

" Is the US army in that bad of a shape that they need you " the BEST in the world ( but can't say the same about our Air Force ) Where I am going next year, the Brigade motto is " fight tonight ". Take that !! Milt

hey, just chill....... lot's of ego higher than Mt. Fuji here. I have quite a few messages " edited/consored/yanked " and even ONE BIG FAT warning from " you know who " but in the end, just go with the flow, learn to write/speak like a senator ( i.e. covers all possible angles /ars$# ) and enjoy the " benefits of the Senate ". Don't be dogmatic or else one may look like a dog a few years down the road when NEW knowledge comes to light. peace............. p.s. hey, may be the Army should send me to Iraq. milt

should be light hammer work all over but now due to rust makes it more " bumpy " that's my guess. milt

Does NTHK paper swords with fatal flaws?
Bungo replied to omorik's topic in Auctions and Online Sales or Sellers
back to the original topic........ If i am not mistaken, NTHK is more " uptight " about a sword's condition while NBTHK has a " slightly different " critrerion on pass/fail shinsa ? I have seen Kamakura period sword with ha-giri ( 4 or 5 and out of polish too, can't remember ) with NBTHK paper but so far NO NTHK paper on sword with ha-giri. milt -
thanks, Nobody san, I was thinking the first 6 kanji ( start from left ) were some sort of " title ", then 2 character mei followed by " draw "....... The first kanji ( actually the 7th ) of the mei, I think, read as " Cho " ( as in Soga school painters ). p.s. pic of date ( at the back of the top rod ), circa 1830's but need translation of the zodiac date to get the exact year. milt

Dirk, I think I actually found a comparable sample mei for YOUR koz........... if you have the Goto family 17 generation catalog, it's on page 114, mei # 46 ( the 5th gen.master ), it's not the same guy as mine ( m ine is on one of those sideline geneology chart ) milt

Is that from a book ? The third kanji doesn't look like " Ho " to me.......... milt

Any experience with this seller?
Bungo replied to omorik's topic in Auctions and Online Sales or Sellers
I bought from this seller before........ a " mixed " bag. Some good , some modan repro. I returned my last purchase ( a sukashi prunus iron tsuba , very good casting ) and got a full refund ( less shipping ). Since his items are all over the place, one can get a decent piece at way below fair market value ( the reverse risk preimum , I call it ) . But since Wall Street sort of in the dump lately, one can get good items elsewhere at comparable low prices. Milt
