I understand you want to buy something cheap and then turn around selling it for a decent profit............... we all do that to finance our hobby to a certain extent ( unless one is independently wealthy and doesn't have to play the lowly merchant game ). But at least get something " decent ". I post 2 pics of a typical Shoami tsuba ( 3 inches across ) which i just " sniped ' at a good price and have every intention to use it as trade or sale later when the stock market calms down. If you have too many low end stuffs, it'll affect your other " better quality " items when time to sell them. You see, you may not want to be Neiman Marcus, but at least try to be Target and certainly NOT DOLLAR DAY . milt

" Ko-tosho tsuba of same time were thicker at the seppa dai area and thinned towards the mimi by up to a third. This meant the mimi was thinner than the hira. This leads me to tosho. Age? genuine patina leads to Muromachijidai, but, the crispness of the sukashi edges seem to belie this. Could be well preserved. No papers, I'd think mid Muromachi Ko-tosho. John " ..................................... but the tsuba doesn't look like what you described . Personally, I'd place the age at Edo ( mid ) milt

Yes there are, but no you won't, because your judgement will be clouded by rubbish and your decisions rationalized with advice from Polly Anna. I should rephrase the question............ assuming there's no shinsa paper. By looking just at the tsuba, would you call it armor maker tsuba of Muromachi period ? A bit " thick " for Muromachi period ? I am not sure about this point, but my impression is early tsuba ( pre-Edo )are usually a bit on the thin side ? I await the sarcastic comment on my " shoot from the hip " ( trait I shared with Georgie my friend ) statement when the sun rises over the Northern Capitol..................... Milt

recently accquired this tsuka................ f/k is hawk on pine tree and sparrows in flight menuki is running horsies. So another example that Edo period fittings don't always match ? Since I am mainly into hawk and couldn't figure out if there's two horses in one menuki , see first pic ( the skinny one with a scared look is one horse, i am sure . See second pic ), I am very tempted to cut the ito and dismantle the whole thingie............... milt

Shan, the type of tsuba you posted are " hard " to pin down, it could be Shoami, Owari , Kaneyama and other related schools like Ono etc. Just like this one I have.......... when in doubt call it a Shoami milt
