Thanks for your response and commiserations guys, but as l said, it was a long long time ago and the plus side was the koshirae. (Will post them later on Geraint.) To be honest, l don’t think that a) It’s worth a polish and b) It would take a polish ? Anyway, here are more photos as promised. I was just curious as to what it was before somebody ruined it.

Hi Guy's, Brian is right, I knew that it was an acid polish as it was bought early 80's and there was a lot of it about back then. (They used to call it a "Liverpool polish" and frown) I just kept it all that time and was now wondering what it was that I had got. It didn't set me back that much at all and the koshirae was kinda nice. Will try to photo in the morning. Thanks everybody.

I'm no expert, but for me alarm bells are.. "Why have a shirasaya (usually specially made to preserve a blade after a really expensive polish) on something that is in really bad condition. Kissaki and Yokote scream out at me also. Bit then again = "An estate sale"... could it have deteriorated this much due to neglect? Would welcome comments from others if I am barking up the wrong tree. Thanks Gwyn

Hi, I'm looking for some advice here. I have an old Tanto that I am working on and the same is good quality but alas it is stained with brown dirt etc in patches. Ideally, I would like to clean up and retain this piece of same on the tsuka. I have already tried a toothbrush with soap and water, Cif and even Domestos BLEACH ! No luck. Any ideas ? Gwyn

Hi Everybody, Working on a restoration at the moment. Can anybody please tell me if there is any rule about how much the Kozuka tip should stand proud the other side of the tsuba when in the saya and through the Hitsu Ana ? Thanks Gwyn
