  1. I expected about as much
  2. Also if anyone could confirm the mei or tell me what it says that'd good...
  3. I do get it but what is written in yumotos book confused me.... Made me think I was wrong... that's all Page 41 of John yumotos book (I think the more recent edition) says: 4. Modern sword (shin-shinto) period (after 1868)......... Now I had read elsewhere and thought shin-shinto was 1781-1868 but yumotos book made me question what I thought I knew.... You all say read his book..... So I do and get confused I mean who am I to question what's in his book.... So I am not quite as unfamiliar as you think... So called experts made me question myself.
  4. Could you help me learn.... are you able to tell me what makes you draw that possible conclusion? or is it just a case of having seen heaps of nihonto you "just know"? Did you mean the smith or the school? thanks for your input!
  5. Sorry I'm not the best with all the terminology........ I think I get what the hamachi / machi is. yaki otoshi is when the hamon starts an inch or so above machi, so a tiny bit of blade has no temper line??? What do you mean by an osaka shinto blade? Do you mean it could be from the osaka shinto school? I googled osaka shinto school and it came up with lots of swords by the school and it seemed they were reputable. Have I understood right? Could you put a guess on an age? An american smith looked at photos and best he came up with is it appears to be of quite some age. Does the end of the tang look to have once had a mekugi hole? is this a shortened blade perhaps? My limited range of books only mentions osaka ishida group / school... So do you think I've done better this time?
  6. Is shinshinto period from 1868-1926? If i'm reading and understanding Yumoto that is the case. Or is it 1781 -1868? You're saying it looks shinshinto would make sense given the current owner just passed on to me this info "There is a nengi on the nakago with the date of tenmei, second year July. Checking the information they gave me that makes it 1781, not 1790." Dated first year of the shinshinto period...........
  7. This has also been offered to me.... Don't think it's anything special but I'm not the expert..... so If anyone can give comment it'd be appreciated... The seppa are new as it didn't have the originals when it was obtained...
  8. What's your idea of dirt cheap? It's part of a 2 sword deal.... this was one I was only buying as it is sold with the wakizashi I've started a thread on... Also forgot to ad this: The minuki are shakado and gold of a samurai with sword and bow look very nice the habaki is a two peace type in copper that was once gold plated
  9. last of the pics........... Just spoke to current owner.... he said regarding the date "There is a nengi on the nakago with the date of tenmei, second year July. Checking the information they gave me that makes it 1781, not 1790."
  10. Supposed to be an edo period blade.... the current owner says its from 1790... not sure if that comes from the mei or what... It is mounted in WWII Koshirae... Some small areas of spider rust, generally in good condition with well defined shinogi and yokote. 65cm cutting edge, suguha, straight hamon. Again opinions comments invited.... I thinking of maybe purchasing this one, but I think I'll go with the wakizashi and other kat I posted threads about...
  11. last pic
  12. This is what I'm told about the wakizashi.... Koto period (pre 1600)Japanese samurai sword wakizashi adapted for Japanese Army officer use.The old blade is signed Kanehisa and is from the mino school and there were many smiths in this school signing kanehisa. It has a notare hamon army tsuba old samuri handle fittings the leather battle cover shows a few feild repairs .Cutting edge is 48.5cm Attatched are pics any info / comments appreciated. I'm probably going to purchase this unless I'm put off by someone here....
  13. last pic...... The hamon is apparently visible at the boshi but the war time polish makes it a bit hard to see it all.
  14. I'm thinking of purchasing this Katana.... It was mounted for WWII but has had it's original Tsuba, seppa etc put back on, also has non military menuki... Pics included... Any info / comments etc welcome.... Can any info be gained from the pics?
  15. Any idea when this paticular smith was alive.... Can you see a year in the mei? Just had owner tell me this: There is a nengi on the nakago with the date of tenmei, second year July. Checking the information they gave me that makes it 1781, not 1790.
  16. The seller says its late edo period 1790 to be precise. I've included a couple of pics of the tang.
  17. Hi people, Well I auctioned off my "uninteresting" (as one member put it) Satsuma wakizashi. It sold for more than double what I paid.... So I've put the money in for another wakizashi, this time with a nice polish, it's in shirasaya It's Mumei has a 523mm nagasa. Overall length 669mm 2 piece copper habaki Some small staining on kissaki and mune. Shirasaya has some minor dents. I will put up the best pics I've got for now... Any info / comments appreciated... Jason G
  18. If anyone is interested, I sold my uninteresting sword for double and a bit what I paid for it, I'm putting the money toward a nice wakizashi with a great polish... It's mounted in shirasaya, I'd like to have it mounted in koshirae... I'll post about it in a new post. Jason G
  19. I am considering purchasing this sword. It's an old blade mounted for WWII. Attatched is the best photo I could get of the mei. Apparently part of it says 1790??? I know it's not a great photo, but if anyone can work magic and tell me what it says I'd be so greatful! Jason G
  20. Would this addition confirm it tobe machine made? I also should have mentioned that the habaki is stamped with a Tokyo arsenal mark, and serial number "13011" I just really like the shape of these blades, but would prefer one with koshirae mounts than the style of handle seen above
  21. So when you hear that all the military / police swords like this one are machine made that is not always true??? Sorry to drag this post up, an indentical sword in a bit better condition has come up for sale locally... Was wondering if the handles are removable on these? Was hoping removing the handle would reveal some great treasure! (yeah right, but no harm in wishing!)
  22. Were nihonto ever mounted in this style? were old family blades remounted in this fashion?
  23. What sort of price do these tend to sell for? Were old family blades ever mounted in this style?
  24. Thanks for that explanation of "satsuma-age" works. Since posting my own pics of the wakizashi I have and being told it was "satsuma" I've been reading about it.... I don't think I quite understood, but your explanation makes it pretty simple...
  25. Thanks for your post Ian, it's the sort of information (history) I wanted.
