... I guess filing down a nakago to fit it into cheap (or any for this matter) koshirae is the same as amputating your kids toes to fit his/her feet into cheap shoes....pictorial spoken if I may... Jock

Hi Brian, I sat here and went through all my previous postings...trying to find out if there was anything different... I wrote the text and e-mailed it to my other computer...copied and pasted it on your board...that worked only when I tried to submit it it failed....maybe...just maybe the format of the e-mailed copy/paste text wasn't compatible and (eventhough it showed in the window) couldn't be processed.... Just trying to find an answer....it works again for me....just in case somebody else is experiencing the same in the future... Jock PS: thanks again! -

Hi Folks, Please give me your opinion on this one....got it quite cheap and could only take the tsuka off after the deal was done....close to tears after I discovered the nakago.... Sori: 17mm Nakago: 190mm Kissaki: 30mm Cutting edge: 710mm thickness at habaki: 7mm thickness at yokoto: 4.5mm width at habaki: 29mm width at yokote: 20mm total length of blade: 900mm It comes with a double habaki and doesn't look polished down - habaki sits perfectly. No flaws such as hagire etc only 1 invisible nail catcher.. May I use this opportunity to ask the following: I came across swords with 8/9/10mm thickness at the habaki....does this mean that 7mm or 6mm thick blades have been polished down or have swords been made 5/6/7mm thick? As you can see in the pics...some no-brainer took almost 35% of the patina away to fit it into cheap cheap cheap koshirae... Thanks for your opinion and feedback.. Jock

Hi, I once bought a Paul Chen Kami katana....the highest range of the Chen katanas.....when I compared it with the lowest grade genuine Japanese katana made around the WW2 time I had to say that it didn't even came close to the quality ....the showa blade was 10x better eventhough it was on the quality side the low range....why paying $1500 for a bad repro if one can buy a good original for half of that price???? chinese blade in genuine japanese WW2 koshirae
werner replied to werner's topic in Auctions and Online Sales or Sellers
.....I for my part (based on my novice-like knowledge) would have taken the following for a genuine one - this one really freaked me out: http://cgi.ebay.com/WWII-98-Gunto-Morde ... 35ae01c6e4 Jock -
Hi, Just to create an awareness...the latest thing I came across is that you can buy genuine ww2 Japanese koshirae with Chinese blades...this might be difficult to spot in the future.... http://cgi.ebay.com/WWII-98-Gunto-Folde ... 35ae01d516 http://shop.ebay.com/kwangsu2005/m.html In this case the seller at least mentions this fact in the posting: "We import/purchase some gunto koshiraes only from Japan and fit our blade into that. " The problem will be that this swords could circulate and the buyers might "forget" to mention the origins of the blades.... Jock

Potatoes agains rust??? -- and just for peace sake: I haven't tried it..... Not saying one should follow the whole process....rather cruel to a piece of art....only wondered if a potato might help here and there? How would that work on a chemical basis...who knows? Jock -
Hi Folks, It's has been often mentioned on this forum that one can bring a nihonto to a show to have it judged by knowledgable guys...now I wondered if there is somebody in Australia where one could send a blade (cost to and from location paid by sword owner) to have it assessed in person...? Maybe even for a fee...? This might be interesting for other countries too... Regards, Jock

rust....no rust ..... rust .....no rust?
werner posted a topic in General Nihonto Related Discussion
Hi, Got something to ask about: I read of a wellknown polisher that he stated that the owner of nihontos has the moral responsibility to ensure that these pieces of art are preserved for future generations....guess we all agree... Now what is your opinion on this one: Say somebody inherited a koto katana of his Grandad - knows about the value but doesn't have the cash for a genuine polish...yet knows that the blade will deterioate if nothing is done about it... Now he has 2 choices: a) let it be destroyed by rust b) carefully (without altering the shape) using fingerstones to get rid of the destructive rust and then store it oiled for the future when he has the financiell means to afford a professional polish....acceptable? Any thoughts on this one? Regards, Jock
