    I would say it's unlikely due to the quality and style of the blade and it doesn't appear to copy anything I've seen (although that means little), The mei is well done, seems contemporary with the blade and it would make little sense to be gimei. It just looks like a typical Shinto short sword, well made, but nothing special. My guess was initially that it was made by an obscure smith that was not listed having signed this way. Ed

    相模國住人貞宗. Sagami Kuni Junin Sadamune wakizashi that appears to be Shinto era...no shots of the tired blade yet, but I haven't found this maker listed anywhere in that period. If anyone has references to this maker please advise. Thanks for looking. Ed P.S. Always a chance I misread the mei so correct me if I am wrong.

    I started to remove the barrel to check for a signature, but it's too tight to remove safely. The stock is fairly thin and not exactly robust after all these years sitting.

    MASAMITSU (正満), Genji (元治, 1864-1865), Tosa – “Doshū-jū Masamitsu” (土州住正満), chū-saku (Markus Sesko translation with thanks) Hawley MAS 533 Link to another of this smith's swords in full polish: https://goldinauctio...r-lot19046.aspx Large thick sword with 29 1/2 inch blade which is not in polish. The hamon is a broad suguha. Mounts are iron with handachi style tsuka and sans menuki. Just a bold sword meant for serious business.

    About 25 years ago a Mr. Nozaki came to my home while visiting in the US. He was an old school armor collector and member (board member I think) of a Japanese armor society and thought this Do to be quite early. At the time he also mentioned the interior lacquer type as a key for koto era armor. That's all I had to go on until that meeting.

    I think Chris partially translated it as Umetada bori and there may be more details in Japanese. The score was high. I can email a scan of the paper if that helps. Ed

    Thanks for the help. I looked it up for the owner and I found no reference to this smith in Hawley's...It's a broad 30" long blade of good quality, but it's not in polish unfortunately.
