To Good To Be True Deal ???
Icepic replied to Icepic's topic in Auctions and Online Sales or Sellers
Thank You Keith, You are correct, I aked for opinions about a sword and recieved a clear response for which I am gratfull. Then my focus shifted to attempting to possible helping others; to which I recieved another clear response:" Not To Meddle". Very wise advise indeed, to which I heeded. I should have left it there and not even responed to the "Rights" issue. I apologize. -
To Good To Be True Deal ???
Icepic replied to Icepic's topic in Auctions and Online Sales or Sellers
Sounds good to me guys. I did not like the idea of doing it anyway; Besides I might want to buy another sword from him someday. I sure like the last one I got from him ,and he treated me good too. P.S. Not to be disrespectful, But I will reserve the right to do whatever I want. -
To Good To Be True Deal ???
Icepic replied to Icepic's topic in Auctions and Online Sales or Sellers
Thanks Folks for clearing that up for me. I have been studying Nihonto long and hard for the past 18 months and have a nice library built up and have three entry level swords with Good Origami. However as a retired machinist my eyes are tired and need plenty of help, which you kind fellows have provided. I have been a serious knife collector for 38 years but have decided to pursue the study of Nihonto in my old age, it helps keep my mind sharp. I guess I have inherited the duty to contact the seller and have a chat with him about this sword before someone makes the mistake that I almost did. I could of had the sword for $5,700. Now I will take that money with me to the Nihon To-ken Hozon Kai in San Francisco next week and see what I can find there. Thanks Again. -
Hello, Does anybody feel that the Sa-No-Yukihide list on e-bay #370418772220, might be one of those "to good to be true deals" ? Two things that concern me about this sword is that it is signed katana Mei, and the low price; not to mention those unknown origami papers. I was under the impression that Sa-Yukihide katanas went for tens of thousands of dollars. I bought a nice Koto katana with NBTHK papers from this seller before with excellent results and the other swords he has listed are nice, So this is not about Him, only the sword. I believe he is a honest person, after all he does offer a seven day money back inspection period. I would be gratfull for any opions for I know there has been some discussion about Sa-Yukihide before on the NMB. P.S. I don't know how to give a link to the listing or I surely would.

New Sword Preservation society question.
Icepic posted a topic in General Nihonto Related Discussion
Hello, has anybody ever heard of the: Dai Nippon Bijutsu Token Hozon Kai ? Great Japan Art Sword Preservation Society. There is a fine sword on e-bay that has this Origami and it looks simular to NBTHK Origami, however when I google it I draw a blank. -
Dear Niclas, I think you made a good purchase. The way I look at it is like this: There is only so many real Japanese swords in the world and there is no shortage of money. Besides the banks are not paying any good intrest right now so why not diversify and invest in some art ? It is fun and educational at the same time. It really bothers me to hear about countries that will not allow swords in. I hope it never comes to that in the USA. Here in Washington State it is quite easy to get a permit to carry a concealed pistol but it is not lawful to carry a concealed fighting blade. Anyway in your letter to your goverment try to insure them that the sword is a Art object and not a weapon anymore. Good Luck, The two swords I bought from Japan took about four to five weeks to arrive to my front door.

Hello, Is it uncommon for a sword to have origami from the NTHK and NBTHK ? It seems to me that more sets of eyes on a sword could be a good thing.

Hello, I ordered a copy from Amazon about a month ago and was also told mid September. The copy I get from Amozon will become my working copy, highlighting, notes ect. But I want to get a signed first release for my collection, does anybody know if these will be available? P.S. Maybe about 47 Ronin should pay Amazon a visit.

Hello Thomas, Here are some pictures of the sayagaki. I hope it helps. By the way, who is Fukunaga Suiken?

Hello Franco, You are correct that is a lame excuse, However I am happy with the polish it has now and I think to much metal would have to be removed to get under the rust. It would probably ruin the blade. Somebody neglected this sword I just want to keep it from any futher deterioration.

Hello Thomas, I will try and post some pictures tomorrow.

Here is a picture of the wakizashi I forgot to post. Buy the way, You can see a rust spot just behind the kissaki, I do not plan to have the sword polished becouse it would cost me more than I paid for the sword, but what is the best way to keep the rust from spreading? Thank You and Good Luck. Mark Pederson.

Hello, I could use some help with confirmation of two origami (attributions) and maybe a stab at time periods. Wakizashi: Sue-Mihara / Edo ? Nagamaki: Jumyo / Early Muromachi ? I am waiting on Mr. Paul Martin's new book I have on order then maybe I can do this for myself and hopefully help others. Here are some pictures.

Thank You Steve and Brian. I hope I can be of some help someday also.

Hello, This is going to be hard to put into words so I will do the best I can. First I will start with a quote and some statments then ask my question. Any comments will be helpfull for I am a bit confused. (one) John M. Yamoto states this in his book: " The point "kissaki" is the most difficult part of a sword to forge and polish. The value of a sword is greatly determined by the condition of the point. Note: Mr. Yamoto never uses the term "hamon" rather uses the term "yaki-ba" I assume they are the same? (two) A sword without a boshi will recieve a pink slip from the NTHK. (three) I see alot of swords for sale that are in old polish where the hamon along the length of the blade is still visible but the boshi along the kissaki is not. Now for my question: If one cannot see a boshi does that necessarally mean that the temper at the kissaki is gone? Some thouhgts: I am sure there are some test that could be preformed to test for temper; the tempered part should be what? at least 62 rockwell where as the rest of the blade about 52 rockwell or so? I guess the best thing to do is just stay away from swords out of polish; It is just I cannot help wondering, if the hamon is still there what happened to the boshi?

Icepic replied to Icepic's topic in General Nihonto Related Discussion
Thanks Folks, Sorry for the late reply but you all gave me so much to ponder. Becouse I have another item to submit for shinsa I think I will submit the koshirae for the katana as a " suite " (I never even heard of that word before) . The price is only $100.00 to submit and I would really like to know. Just for fun I will try and post some better pictures. -

Hello. I am seeking help in some translation. I would like to know the shina date on this origami and nagago infomation. This is what I think I know so far: The origami is NTHK ranked kanteisho and the smith is Kaneyoshi from the Mino school. The dealer I bought the sword from says it is 17th. century, however in John M. Yumoto's book he has this smith listed as 1400? The question mark must mean he was not sure i guess. Any help would be great. This research has been fun.
