  1. You are correct on the length. However, bohi extends past habaki and overall width and thickness of the blade is less than other katanas that I have. My first thought was an older modification of katana to wakizashi length but that's purely a guess.
  2. Very interesting and exceptionally fast result. Amazing group of folks here. This helps tremendously to understand the history of the sword. Not being and expert I can only assume the sword is from a Koto period and may have been a katana at one point. It is dimensionally correct for wakizashi although it is a bit long.
  3. It appears to be a higher grade wakizashi with full bohi and gold foil wrapped habaki. Family had it for the past 70 years with no change in possession. Everything points to a valuable blade but translation escapes me. Looks like only two kanji but blade seems to be rather old. Any help is much appreciated.
  4. Phenomenal! Thank you so much.
  5. Thank you for making this correction.
  6. Guys, I ran across this sword in gun to mounts. But the blade quality is exceptional. Any help with the signature and id is greatly appreciated.
  7. It's the light on the pictures. The kanji age is consistent with the rest. It was not in gunto but koshirae.
  8. I had previously posted about getting an interesting wakizashi sword with various parts missing and blade that had seen better days. however, here is a good shot of the signature on both sides. Any thoughts? I will post blade details shortly.
  9. this is the only pic of the signature i've got. i saw the sword in person and it appeared to be short but i was not certain about the cut down. i will try to get better pics later. as i recall the blade was stained and was way far from perfect. probably not worth a bunch but the signature was very interesting.
  10. here is the pic of the other side. hopefully, it's clear enough. i hope it's not a cut down blade but how do you tell?
  11. this is a blade that belongs to a friend of mine who knows nothing about swords (as i do). it appears to be a wakizashi sword but i am no expert. any thoughts or ideas are greatly appreciated. sorry about the poor quality pic. that's all i have.
  12. I am grateful for all your replies and thoughts. Your knowledge and research surpassed all my expectations.
  13. Thank you George. This is very good information.
  14. the tiny stamp on the rib of the stamp was described to me as Army Arsenal Nagoya Factory - Nagoya Army Arsenal inspection mark: "Mei". there are no other stamps on the blade. does that indicate that this is a machine made blade or a traditional one?
  15. Thank you all guys for the information.
  16. Here are some pics. The fingerprints stained the blade with dark spots all over and I wiped it down with oil but the metal is not clear yet. You can see the metal under the fittings is stunning with blade near mint. however the exposed blade has those dark spots that wont come off. any good advice? otherwise, it is in very nice shape with great fittings and all original unrestored scabbard.
  17. it is identical to this one in the link. exact twin with few more fingerprints on the blade. http://www.artswords.com/a_nice_imperia ... 011208.htm
  18. i will take some more pics tonight. there is like a tiny stamp on top of the tang rib. i could only match it approximately to nagoya arsenal proof.
  19. My first sword purchase - a WWII shin-gunto. Condition is VG to excellent with fingerprints all over the blade. I tried to decypher the markings but no luck. My best guess is that it is year 1943 but as far as maker and the rest I have no clue. Anyone?
