First time making a habaki
budodeshi replied to budodeshi's topic in General Nihonto Related Discussion
Thanks IanB yah i wished i had used some thicker copper for this one but I'll be getting some better stuff soon. I did manage to get a bit of a wedge shape by filing and sanding. I got the saya carved yesterday I'll have some pic up later today if you guy's want. -
Let me start of by saying that i'm no pro. This should never be attempted on a nihonto with out the proper knowledge, tools, and year's of experience in the field of habaki making. I have a Shobu zukuri made by John Lundemo http://sbgswordforum.proboards.com/inde ... read=16910 that needs to be mounted so the first step is to make the habaki.I know its not a nihonto but there's no way in hell i'd try to make a habaki for the few Japanese blade's i do have. I made a very poor tutorial for you guy's i hope it helps you in some way or a other. If there's any one that is active in habaki making i would appreciate any help or comments good or bad Also if there is any thing i missed or did not do correctly please let me know.. So here we go.. http://s234.photobucket.com/albums/ee18 ... V_0016.mp4 http://s234.photobucket.com/albums/ee18 ... V_0017.mp4 http://s234.photobucket.com/albums/ee18 ... Some help would be very appreciated in confirming the makers signature.FYI i got this of ebay for 70$.I'll put it on my new lundemo when i get it...
-
No responce yet and i still cant find the reason as to why they would plug up the kozuka or kogai holes.
-
So after some consideration i decided to get a refund. Not just because it may be fake at 36$ i was not holding my breath.I'll put the money some were else. Thank for all the response sorry to have wasted your time but it was not a total lost i learned a few new things about the Yari. Thanks
-
Fake or not for 36$ not its not to much of a lost .
-
I gess i'll take the chance to have it shipped by ground mail. Heres some pic from the seller.
-
I don't think that they offer insurance for ground mail.If they did I'd wait.but i don't want to take the chance that it gets lost.
-
Looks like i wont be getting my yari. This is the massage i woke up to. Dear Sir, Thank you for your order. I have bad news. The international aviation law was changed from JULY of 2010. I can not send the swords and spears by not nonstop airplain. From Japan to your country, there is not nonstop airplain. So I can not send to your country by EMS and SAL. I can send by only suraface. But Surface is without insurance and need one month ~ two month. If you can accept by surface, I can refund money of difference shipping cost. This is $. And I will send you by surface. If you can not accept by surface. I will full refund money. I am sorry this case.... Please let me know your answer. I am waiting for your e-mail. Best regards. What the hell

I won i small yari on ebay today for 36$.Total lengh is 23'' with a 4.1'' nagasa and 2.1cm for motohaba. There's no mei but it looks authentique as for age i would not dare speculate. Would anyone know of some sites with info like the reason for these(stelth)? or how to narrow down the make of this one. I can post only the pic i got from the ebay seller if you whant or wait ti'll i get it in a week or so. Thanks

Could anyone shed some light on why the kozuka or kogai ana on a good number of tsuba were filled in with a ategane? I just don't understand the reason behind this.
-
Thanks guy's for the friendly welcome. The more i read the more i seen i have much more road to cover before i can offer my services for restoration work .ie(saya ,tsuka ,tsuka-maki).As of now I've only work on Chinese production katana.I'd order the blade & fittings and make the rest.It was a good way to learn seeing the blade only cost 100$ or lest but you can only learn so much with the low end stuff. So i commissioned John Lundemo to make me a 26'' hira zukuri. This will be my first higher end blade hopefully this project will give me the confidence to try my hand at restoring a nihonto Oh and sorry for the blurry pic's I'm working with a 3.2mp dinosaurs of a cam 2 of the pics turned out not bad. First off let me say hello to all members Before i ask for your help I'd like to introduce myself. The name's david/budodeshi. I've been interested in the Japanese culture sense i can remember 20 year or so.I studied Mainly Yoseikan Budo and dabbled in some aikido and Toyama ryu for a couple of years. For the last 6 year I've done as much research on Japanese culture, mainly weaponry as possible and I'm still very much a amateur. This is why I've come to this forum to further my studies of this wonderful culture. Now for the help part This is my first antique tsuba. Now i'm 99% sure its not a fake but there always that 1%. There is no mei so that wont help. The seller was out of Japan and stated that is from edo period(?) A name for this style would be nice seeing as i have no clue what to call it. All i know is that is a maru-gata shape with a maru-mimi rim. Now are the kozuka and kogai ana considered Sukashi? In the last pic you can see that theres a pattern of 4 dragons on the ura side mind you its verry faint. And maby some silver painted kanji on the omote. There seem to be some nice Tekkotsu tho like i said I'm a nube when it come to tsuba. So if any one would like to share some info on what they know about this style of tsuba i would be very grateful.
