  1. Grev. Am I missing something with this recent post? John
  2. A pocket folder is essential, from whittling away some problem, to digging out slivers, to opening parcels, even in a pinch cleaning a pipe bowl. Imagine all the things a pocket knife can do; MacGyver to Bond. 'Nuff said. John
  3. It looks like 俊 John
  4. That is a gorgeous kodzuka. John
  5. Cast nets look like that when hung on net racks. Gill net racks are usually horizontal bars just like for hanging laundry. John
  6. Keep them stored in a humid place, no light. Wax won't hurt. John
  7. I used to think our community was fairly small. I am used to seeing the same folk at the various places. I have revised that, as, I see sales, and plenty of them, to people I've never seen in collectors circles or in chat fora. These myriad thousands have created demand which raises prices accordingly. A 1970 dollar has risen 583% to purchase an equivalent value today. This is half what demand has created. We have to become more discriminating and selective (my failing). John
  8. A good pick-up. Seems relevant to either sub-forum. Dealers choice, what? John
  9. I wish I had some photos taken, especially at Oyamazumijinja. Lucky! John
  10. And here I thought photography in both locations prohibited. I did see some tourists taking snaps though. It is not as if there are prosecution for it, the guard at the NBTHK museum usually stops the practice. John
  11. A truism is; location, location, location. My house was 350k with beach front to the ocean and a lake to the side. White sand stretching for miles. Sound like paradise? No. Bad location. There is little demand for property on the Arctic Ocean. Why the price? 54k was the cost to ship the materials; about 80k for labour. The house would be under 200k down south a thousand miles or so. John
  12. Very good journalistic stylisation, quite worthy of Will Rogers fans. John
  13. Try Tensho characters and compare. John
  14. It is amazing how many stories prefaced by "It is said...." there are in Japan. The countryside certainly can promote flights of fancy and ancient daring-do, especially after some good nosh and convo. You really had a good day for it. John
  15. The boshi is hard to see, maybe you could tell me; does it have any kaeri. A feature is a rather long kaeri for Yamato Mihara blades. Not a law as I have ore that is fairly short frrom an omaru boshi. The chu-suguba is an attractive feature to me. John
  16. Yes, Curran, it is good for people to know the work and dedication that often goes unremarked or unthanked (sic) by certain gifted people. We all benefit. John
  17. I think it is an older blade as well. It really needs a closer inspection. I can't see any inscription (mei) on the tang (nakago), I'll assume not one unless you see such. Perhaps some experienced collector in Michigan may be close and give a hand. John
  18. hello Robert, welcome. I hope I don't sound too pedantic, but, anyhow, Nihonto in itself means Japanese sword; Nihon-Japan and To-sword. So, adding the words Japanese or sword to the word Nihonto is redundant. Little info can be gleaned from the one pic I have access to and look forward to more. John
  19. Another loss to our community, much too small already. Condolences. John
  20. I;ve a notion of Echizen and later shinto period, just as an aside. The pine crane fittings are very nice, the whole koshirae is rather tight and fine. Not a bad trade. John
  21. I like the idea. A hidden weapon under guise of a pipe case and tobacco pouch. I agree in that it looks like a shard has been married to a surplus case. John
  22. Investigate the meaning behind shan shui. There are certain common elements that define it. Adopted by some Japanese artists and reflected taste in other craftwork. John
  23. I have to second that point. Sori is based on the purpose, style and convention of the time. A weapon used ahorse would certainly have different characteristics than one used afoot. Too in armour must blows are received as bludgeons rather than sweeping slashes. Different tools for different jobs in essence. John
  24. What the heck. The link I just copied and pasted works. Inconceivable. John
  25. I meant this part. It just opens a white blank with some design. " 火縄銃煙の輪っか。#火縄銃 #鳥取 #鳥取城跡 #tottori pic.twitter.com/JYsqgA7LEi — chanjun (@chska825) March 13, 2021 "
