  1. I've seen just about all the common soft metals used, including lead. Why? Can only be esthetics. How? Ford. John
  2. A complex subject. We could debate for hours on it. The difference between, ethical behaviour, moral behaviour, proper behaviour, proper conduct, the social contract, right and wrong. As with antiques, I follow a simple path; do no harm. John
  3. Not sure, but, could 管人 mean a musician of flute or fife or similar?
  4. Main column, Isozaki Toshihide kun. Master (as in young man) Isozaki Toshihide 磯嵜俊秀君 Yamaguchi Masayoshi 山口正義

  9. A finely made shotgun, an effective arbalest, skillful physical feats, an evocative turn of phrase; these are all an high art. To think the craft of making a sword that exhibits the penultimate, if not ultimate, in function as well as beauty in form, is not an high art is unjust. Vulcan at his forge is the god of functional art and the beauty exists in the function, the way it works, as much as in the pleasant appearances. John
  10. All I can say is the yakite on the left tsuba directs me to a school, the others copies thereof, and it is appealing to me more than the other two. John
  11. Relating visual arts to Nihonto is one dimensional. There are many aspects to a sword that are not visual. Art evokes emotion and a sword of artistical merit should do the same. John
  12. There was an old saw that two piece habaki with the inner piece being shakudo was a sign of less than desirable quality of sword. How telling this would be, I don't know, as I like the look and that may be why. A distraction? John
  13. I vote replica. John

  17. Strange. Link says 利壽 is Toshitomo in the header and Toshinaga in the description. John
  18. There is a Kanbun smith that signed such 兼貞 , also had the family name Fujiwara in the mei, but, this is a kogatana and any smiths name can be inscribed either the actual maker or just in homage to a maker. This is likely of the second type. John
  19. I am thinking Sunshu ju Kanesada.駿州住兼貞 John
  20. I dislike these choppy mei. Maybe 俊清 Toshikiyo if not something else. John
  21. Tanisaki seems correct though. 谷先 John
  22. Somehow my kanji replicated two 贈 and deleted the 射 which was critical for it being a shooting reward. Should have been 贈射撃優等者 Darn it. John
  23. It is stronger because the critical bending moment is increased by changing the center of mass. As you put more area farther away from the sword's cross-sections centroid, the moment of inertia increases thereby decreasing the stress. John
  24. It is saying this sword is a presentation with affection for academic excellence. 贈贈撃優等者 John
