  1. It is the amylopectin in glutinous rice that creates the glue effect. Basically a long chain of sugar molecules, a polysaccharide like starch. John

  6. I have heard the balance being adjusted by the weight of the tsuba among other fixes. True or not? I'm not sure, but, balance is a thing. John
  7. Critics. Those that can't create art themselves. Ford, you are right for the most part. Art is subjective, but, there are objective criteria as well. Primitive or naïve art like Grandma Moses has objectively little to compare to Rembrandt in that there was no formal apprenticeship, but, subjectively can be appreciated for its representational qualities. We see it from time to time with tousogu and label these as folk or country work. Indeed though artificial ranking of ability is obscure. John
  8. The width seems relatively normal, the length is outside of the norm. I'd be comfortable with it I think. John
  9. Well, 卡土里 is in Chinese a foreign word 'kaluli' or calorie in English. It could also be Kalu village or Card Street village. 恩他呢 'guntaanei' means 'whatever' or 'doesn't matter'. I can't think of a place name or given name that coincides with these phonemes, but, could be some foreign name, or different dialect.
  10. I would hazard to say the red rust is making the seppa hard to remove. Rust expands the original diameter. It must be removed by boning, even by some bamboo until it can be wiggled free. Time and patience. John
  11. Hi Mark, I moved your gunto to the appropriate section. John
  12. The only boar fitting I have is this kozuka. It is rather nice. John
  13. 7500zl is about $2000US is it not? Might be alright there, but, I'd hesitate at more. John
  14. I would have thought, just by intuition, something like a tsuhoubako, 通報箱 message case. John
  15. I think 貝虫 is referring to what the piece depicts, a type of snail maybe. Anyway, it would be one heck of a bad 'go'. John
  16. There is no doubt to me it is Choshu, perhaps Kawaji. Many artists in this group produced similar tsuba, some a little better than others. Example of mine in this theme, millet and leaves. John
  17. Reminds me of a Toki Yoshihira Kanemasa. John
  18. Do not use autofocus. John
  19. Fixed.
  20. It is like the difference between a service weapon and a special weapon retired to preserve some desirable attribute. They require different treatment. John
  21. I think they are chimaki as well. Funny story; I was served the square variety and being the first time eating jung shi as they are called in China, did not open it and eat. I used a sharp knife and cut it to pieces and ate the entire package, bamboo leaves and all. Very chewy, for sure. Haaaa! What a dumb move. John
  22. Can you get a more crisp pic? The mei is hard to read. John
