火の用心 That reminds me that I sent a pair of those hyoushigi to Brian but they never reached him. I should have described them as 'bowl cleaners' or 'bad medicine' or something . Sometimes honesty may not be the best policy...

On Uchigatana, yes. I've seen numerous examples of tanto and wakisashi that had an inscription on the ji that were proper swords. Usually shinto.

The blade tips of fake are often "squared off". The bohi (fuller groove) is usually wrong.

The first thing I look for is the stamping on the fuchi. These are almost always bad. They are getting better, lately, but usually they will mess these up.
