I am far from an expert, but I don’t think it is jifu since the hada flows through it. My understanding of jifu is that it free of the hada. I could be totally wrong, though, as jifu seems to be hard to consistently define.

It's different for sure.

Any resources on the proper way to pack an armor into its box?
fleetinbeing posted a topic in Katchu
Previous owner did a decent job when it was shipped to me but its moving day soon and I want to be as careful as possible. Key question is whether to place the dou upside down or not. If yes it simplifies packing, but it also puts the weight all on those two shoulder panels connected to the back of the dou. i wouldnt want them to bend if fthe truck went over a bump. -
Iv seen similar hada in a shinshinto katana from touken Matsumoto. The forging style, ive forgotten but very pleasing

https://eirakudo.shop/089484 Muromachi period tanto. The pattern are quite odd. Any ideas as to what type of hada this is? Jed

Hello all, Could anyone with more knowledge than me on tsuba types and history (which is just about everyone) help me with this tanto tsuba. I'm assuming it's from the mid to late edo period based on the inlay work but the no nonsense construction says early edo or slightly earlier. It's well constructed sitting perfectly without and rattle when seated. It measures 5cm x 3.3cm. Some of you have probably seem it on ebay. I liked the design of it and needed it for a project I'm working on but I want to learn more about it. Thanks for forgiving my ignorance 🫠 Ken

Viktor, have you noticed the two main designs of these "Fallen Liondancer"? One lot has bare feet like your last example and the other are wearing 'tabi' shoes as in your first one. Nice paperweights - now obsolete even for that purpose! Ebay junk https://www.eldreds.com/auction-lot/inlaid-shibuichi-presentation-tsuba-with-high-rel_10B489BA6A [expensive auction junk] https://www.ebay.com/itm/285283666195 [worse than junk!] https://germaniainternational.com/Japan.html Dragon High-Art [] Tsuba (signed) (Item Japan 1-14) DESCRIPTION: Here is a very fine bronze Tsuba. PRICE: $485.00 Christies sale - at least his tabi are clean

Yes, that is correct. Not imperial. It's a gift for a boy on his becoming 3 years of age (given on Boy's Day, May 5th, 1916). The boy's surname is Matsuba. Not sure if the rest is his given name, or if it is 満礼三 (in celebration of 3 years).

Is this a modern casting of the 21st century? If so, there are no questions. I also find the following tsuba interesting: High art, but also not for sword?
-
Ford's Ginkgo is not a cast tsuba.
-
They don’t. Those are mass market cast pieces

Greetings to all! In a later Meiji or Showa, there are often tsuba for decoration or tsuba that are not intended for a sword. I'll post an example of such a tsuba, I don't understand one thing, why couldn't a proper seppa dai be done? One of my favorite tsuba made by Ford Hallam: This tsuba also has an inlay in the place of the seppa dai, but this does not prevent it from being installed on the sword. Ford himself said that practical importance comes first. So why did the craftsmen make decorative tsuba, if it would be possible to take into account the practical application? Kind regards, Viktor

If all you read is peer reviewed academic sources, then stick with peer reviewed academic sources. This isn't that. It's a sword collectors guide, for Pete's sake I personally found it really helpful and informative. Thank you for putting it together, awesome work!

Authentic? Put together

I think this is a piece of a broken sword made to look like a tanto, kinda. Nothing worth collecting. Grey -

I've been asked to write an article a few times, and I've always refused because I don't think I'm legitimate enough to do so. Anyone can write anything, but that doesn't make it a valid reference. An example (i choose it for a reason) : https://www.skyfall.fr/wp-content/2016/05/Earth-Science-Reviews_FG_2016-.pdf

Dang! Hopefully I can figure this out. A bit of a learning curve for me Try again if you get the chance. It seems to be working for me, and I’ve already got an inquiry from the “contact form” from another member. Hoping I can smooth out hiccups like this before the end of the day. Thank you for letting me know, -Sam

Chris, unfortunately I can’t tell when fusegumi (伏組) or jabara-ito (蛇腹糸) came into fashion. These “cords” were usually used to cover the butt edges between different e-gawa, as you might know…
