Bruce,

It is upside down, and I think it says "made tomorrow in China" :?

Long time...thought you gave up on Japanese swords in favour of other militaria. Maybe catch up with you at the Arms Fair this coming weekend. ;)

Yes, it could...just as long as you don't want your katana to have yasurime, and want the kanji cut with a blunt dremel. Combined with awkward characters and lack of precision. And then cut them over the shinogi. Doesn't look like the maker knew Japanese very well. Can we have a pic of the whole tang and/or the tip of the blade?

Sorry gents... the writing all looks the same to me! As you can tell I'm not very knowledgable in this area.

Good to hear from you Brian. Believe it or not but I've still been buying shin-guntos, not like the old days but still reasonably active.

Maybe it's time I started learning to read the kanji though!!! Getting seriously involved in Japanese armour at the moment, and bought this sword as I thought it would look good displayed with one of the suits.

Will keep an eye out for you on Saturday.

All the best

Hello,

I think Brian is correct in his judgement.

The Koshirae looks interesting at first.

The blade is not Japanese.

It might have been real even though the bad kanji. Sometimes owners add their own name to the blade.
