MacTheWhopper Posted April 2, 2020 Report Posted April 2, 2020 I found a sword online that I couldnt identify in dawsons book. It looks very similar to the naval swords but the scabbard and guard didnt quite match up and there was no anchor present. Does anyone know what kind of swords these are and potential prices of them? Denis V Posted April 2, 2020 Report Posted April 2, 2020 Hello Kenny, interesting find. My first thought went to a police parade sabre. But two things don’t match. The two suspension rings and the fact that there is no metal ornate on the back and side of the handle... which is very specific. in the Fuller and Gregory book I found a drawing of such a sword like yours with these two specific characteristics and it states: “regulation c. 1873 pattern marines and marine artillery offecers and NCO’s sword” a picture of the back of the pommel would be interesting. Sometimes this is the place where specific indications are. Denis Quote
lonely panet Posted April 2, 2020 Report Posted April 2, 2020 Imho it isnt not Japanese, I believe it could be a European (french ) sword Remember all early Japanese military swords are heavly influenced but french and Prussian militarys. So hence the simular appearances 2 Quote
Denis V Posted April 2, 2020 Report Posted April 2, 2020 Spot on Hamfish, and you’re correct for the French. Some google attempts and you’ll find the French infantry sabre model 1855 which looks exactly the same as the pics. 2 Quote
Peter Bleed Posted April 3, 2020 Report Posted April 3, 2020 But wait a minute. You mean people other than the Japanese used to make swords? Peter Forgive me. I was making a bit of a joke, but we Japan Hands tend to forget to look widely... P 4 Quote
Austus Posted April 7, 2020 Report Posted April 7, 2020 I have one of these. The blade has a stamp that says A. GIROULT and PARIS (their capitals). This sword is light as a feather. Pretty sure that Ken would call it a Foil. Quote
