kissakai Posted September 1, 2018 Report Posted September 1, 2018 Hi I was going through my Bushu (Ito) tsuba and was curious about a mumei tsuba of mine It was bought from Mr Thierry Bernard in 2014 and is a favourite of mine. Good iron and nice to the feel I'm very sure it is Bushu (Ito) and thought circa 1850. Size = 71 x 68 x 3.9mm Looking at a signed example in the Tosogu Classroom V1 (I hope it's not copyrighted otherwise the post will be deleted) Karatsu ju Masayoshi I wonder why some of the later tsuba are unsigned and does anyone think they may be by the same hand? TETSUGENDO Posted September 2, 2018 Report Posted September 2, 2018 Grev, Nice example, attribution fits, could easily date as much as 20/30 years earlier as well. Without great high res photos, or in hand examination, pairing these two pieces with any degree of certainty is impossible. From crude visual comparison alone my feeling is that the tsuba are by different hands. -S- Quote
kissakai Posted September 3, 2018 Author Report Posted September 3, 2018 Thanks Steve Just an observation: It seems strange that there is always a push to buy books and although the descriptions will be of merit it seems strange if we can't really use the book images as a guide Quote
TETSUGENDO Posted September 3, 2018 Report Posted September 3, 2018 Grev, Doubtless, the more material the better, but even the best of books have their limitations......understanding what they are enhances their usefulness. Ultimately, nothing can substitute for in hand examination and knowledgeable mentorship. Those lacking a mentor should go to as many GOOD auctions as possible, unlike museums you can examine the exhibits! I suspect you would agree? Cheers, -S- Quote
